The cottage is named after Augusta Alford, who was married to Henry King Alford, once Mayor of Toowoomba. Henry and Augusta owned the property from 1901 to 1920.
Henry Alford was christened on 29 August, 1852 by the Rev. Benjamin Glennie and this marked an historic event, being the first time a Church of England service was held in Toowoomba and the first day the word "Toowoomba" was written on a public document. By this act, Henry's mother, Elizabeth (Boulton) Alford had the honour of giving Toowoomba its present name.
