Beautiful 'Monte' (typical Alentejo's rural house) within a 3Ha property with lots of trees. Very quiet location, amazing views. You'll love to sit outside in the afternoon enjoying the landscape or in the hot summer evenings under the starry sky.
THE HOUSE — bigger than it looks from the outside — is and old rural house, with thick stone walls, composed of various small spaces. The living room (and the bigger room) are in one end of the house, the other rooms in the other end. In the middle you'll have the dining room and kitchen. This enables guests to rest while others stay up late, providing privacy for members of larger groups (two families, for instance).
The house has 4 bedrooms open to guests. Two of them with double beds, one with two single beds and another with a bunk bed and two single beds (perfect for kids/teenagers). There's also a double futon in the upper level of the living room. In total, 12 people can sleep in the house.
The KITCHEN is equipped with all the essencial machines (including dishwasher, washing machine, microwave) and has a table where 6/8 people can have meals. The DINING ROOM has a big table (seats 12 people). The LIVING ROOM has two levels, (there's wood heater in the lower level).
The house in located in the middle of a 3Ha property, full of fruit and olive trees. The property is surrounded by other properties, and, as such, distant (but close enough) to any road. This makes it a very calm place, where you won't hear much anything apart the birds, the wind in the trees, and the cicadas... The landscape is beautiful any time of the year.
You'll feel like you're isolated far into the country side — the perfect hide away. (In fact, you'll find it hard to believe you're just 1,8km away from the town square!)
The outside of the house is as least as enjoyable as its interior: you can seat outside, in the big terrace / platform, or stroll through the property. You can also take longer walks or bicycle rides in the countryside around the property. You can walk to the village (20-25 minutes walk to town square), and visit its many attractions, shop for food in the local market, enjoy its lovely architecture.
The SUMMER in Alentejo can be quite hot. In the hotter days of July and August, temperatures can go reach 40º or even higher. Due to its thick walls the house can stay much cooler (as long as guests are careful to keep doors and windows closed during the day). In Summer, you’ll particularly love staying outside in the hot summer nights. In the colder days of WINTER temperatures can reach a few degrees positive, very rarely going as low as 0º or less during the day. From time to time (every five years or so), it can snow, but it’s a very rare event. For the colder days the house is fully equipped with electric heaters and a couple of wood heaters. In AUTUMN and SPRING the weather is mild, with no such extremes. The interior of Alentejo is driest part of Portugal but there’s always a fair amount of rainy days from the end of September to end of April. During the same period it’s also quite probable you’ll have some very beautiful, sunny (and even warm) days.
You can have access to all amenities, except for one room that will be closed.
You can use all the machines and tools in the kitchen.
In winter time you can use the wood heaters (wood will be provided at an extra charge).
There are many deck chairs (as well as a table) you can use to sit or even eat outside in the terrace.
If you want, you can pick some fruit and herbs for your use during your stay. (Depending on the time of the year that might be are oranges, pears, apples, figs, prunes, grapes, etc. All very tasty!)
There's a parking space (covered) for two cars.
We'll be there to welcome our guests and to provide any needed instructions about the house or the region. Someone we trust, who lives nearby, will be available might any situation need urgent taking care of.
We expect our guests to leave everything as they found. We prefer our guests not to smoke inside the house. Pets are welcome as long as they stay outside the house — a shelter can be provided (guests can contact us about this).
No parties allowed.
I'm a retired teacher.
I normally live in Lisbon, but every time I can I love to spend some time in our country house in Vila Viçosa.
Ever since I was a child I used to spend my Summer holidays in a family house in Alentejo, and I've always loved its landscape, its architecture, its gastronomy, etc. I'm sure you'll love it too — everyone does!
Together with my son and daughter, I've bought this house in 1999. After some important construction works, in order to make it more comfortable, we've been using it ever since. It's my favorite place, and I would love if you'd enjoy it as much as I do.
