I arrived to stay with a stranger and I left a really good friend.
Kari was the best person I could had met to start my time in Finland. He helped me to find my way to Kerava and even picked me up at the train station on my arrival day. He showed me where I can buy food and was so helpful. He gave me hints where to buy a sim-card and which grocery store is less expensive. He was willing to answer my questions about Finland and its culture and at the same time was curious about Germany. When he went to do groceries he asked me if I want to join him, so I didn’t had to carry all.
The house is spacious, comfortable and clean. The attic itself is also spacious and provides you your own privacy. The bed is big and comfortable. Everything you might need is provided. Kari offers you bed linen and towels. If you stay longer, as I did, it is also possible to wash your clothes. For me one highlight was the fireplace and the backyard where you can easily do plane spotting, but it is not noisy. On the contrary the neighborhood is quiet and offers a lot of nature. So if you like jogging or going for a walk, exploring nature Kerava is the right place for you.
The cat is clean and mostly living outside. She is really gentle and habitude to children. If you close the attic door she will stay out, but if you like company she might join you.
Kari is working a lot and needs its quiet times, but when he is free and in the mood he also enjoys company. We spend some evenings watching films, having a glass of wine and a nice talk. If you are lucky he presents you to his friends and family, which are all very friendly and nice. I stayed one and a half month and even had the luck to cook typical Finnish food with his mom.
Buses to Helsinki goes every half an hour and it takes round about 45 Minutes, but one bus is a direct one. I think the connection is really good, so trains are also going in the night until two and the busses until midnight. They start going in the morning at four. Kerava is a really safe place. Don’t worry!
All in all I totally recommend to stay at Karis place.
It might be not the city center of Helsinki, but Kerava is such a lovely place. With this stay you might just not stay at a stranger’s house, you might find a really good friend, like I did.
Thank you Kari for hosting me and giving me all these incredible experiences and memories of Finland. Whenever you come to Germany you are more than welcome.
