I really enjoyed staying at the Surf Shack. I originally picked it because I liked the area in Itzapa, as it was close to the water. It ended being so much more than I could have expected. The Owner’s Guatemalan family runs the place, and they are really fun to interact with. I did not come for surfing but I ended up surfing and having fun with that. Apparently this beach is one of the best places for surfing in Guatemala The Owner has an organization that helps the local kids surf as a hobby and keeps them out of trouble. There are friendly dogs and they will follow you to go surfing and it is fun. I came to Guatemala for fishing, and the owners were able to put me in contact with a local fisherman with a 25 ft panga boat and we had fun adventures fishing. The Surf Shack is in a nice location in a river that intersects a secluded beach. Although it says Hostal, it really seems like a guest house…. not crowded rooms. Really a special place.
If you come I would recommend you:
1. Take the taxi directly from the airport
2. Take a shuttle to Antigua from the airport, stay overnight in Antigua, get a shuttle to Itzapa the next day (remembering there is only 1 shuttle per day I think)
Thank you Leen, Adixa, Betty, and Alma.
