If its the special "flavor" of a Historic Land-marked and fully integrated Bed Stuy block, our home will appeal to you. The neighborhood offers a wide range of restaurants, spas, coffee shops, jazz clubs; galleries African American Churches and easy access to the Brooklyn Cultural District (12 minute bus ride), Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and the Brooklyn Museum. Akua’s Bed-Stuy Study is in a private brownstone owned by Akua and her husband Carlton since 1981. The house is a Victorian brownstone with all of the original detail including fire places, wood wainscoting, 15’high ceilings and stained glass windows. The Study is a top floor sun drenched bedroom and library with hundreds of books covering a wide range of topics from African literature through sustainable design. The Study comfortably sleeps three adults but can also accommodate 4. Guests have their own private bathroom with Jacuzzi on the top floor, washer and dryer, access to the parlor floor kitchen and access to the backyard meditation garden with a koi pond, waterfall and lush vegetation. Carlton and Akua live on the lower three floors of the home and are generally available for information on the neighborhood and New York.
Carlton and Akua have been engaged in the neighborhood for over 30 years as teachers, artists, architect, sustainable housing developer and activist. The house is a single family home where Akua and Carlton raised their children who are now young adults living in nearby neighborhoods. Akua and Carlton still live in the house and are making the extra rooms available on Air B&B, now that their children have moved out. The point is, it’s still a quiet family home with all the little nick-knacks-knocks indicative of family homes, family photos, sports trophies and all of the little things that make the experience of Akua’s Study so different from a hotel stay. It is not unusual for other artist, activist, business leaders, family friends and public intellectuals who are included in the family’s circle of friends to drop by for lively conversations.
Access to share kitchen and dining room on parlor floor and back yard garden. May use washer and dryer on top floor. Ground floor apartment and third floor bedrooms and bathroom are off limits.
We will be present during our guest's stay on most occasions. Will interact with guests when they are on parlor floor or sometimes backyard but can give them as much privacy as they desire.
Like to talk with other environmentalist and people engaged in the world of social justice and culture. Prefer travelers with no children under the age of 12. We also have a house cat, Naivasha who is quite friendly and will want your attention if you leave your door open. She also has a strange habit of taking socks or guest's and dropping them on a rug in the living room on the parlor floor. Why I don't know other than cats do weird things. If you are allergic to cats, Akua's Bed Stuy Study is not for you
No smoking or drugs permitted in the house. Pets are not allowed. If guest are allergic to or afraid of cats, they should not book Akua's Study. We have a cat Navasha, who is friendly to a fault, has the run of the house and cant wait to be petted by you whether you like cats or not.ò
