My husband and I (in our 30s and from Virginia, U.S.A.) spent a wonderful week at Alain's place. We loved the location. Although it is on a busy main road, the views of banana trees, mango trees, and various other jungle type flora and fauna surrounded us. The apartment is on the upper level of a two level house, with the property managers (a nice young couple from France) living below. They have cats, dogs, chickens, and were incredibly laid back and friendly.
Our favorite part was being an easy walk from the most beautiful beach we could imagine, probably about a half mile. The access spot to the Grand Anse closest to this apartment is secluded, with gorgeous views and lots of palm trees for shade. If you love lying on the beach all day, this is a great option for you. The sand was a beautiful gold, we could see the lush mountains around us, and the waves were huge.
The apartment is easily walkable to the center of Deshaies, which has restaurants, a few small shops, and a terrific French style bakery where we got sandwiches for lunch most days and pastries for breakfast. Deshaies is small and scenic, with gorgeous sea and mountain views. Businesses are small and do not keep the type of regular hours to which I'm accustomed, but being able to eat fresh seafood right next to the ocean was a real treat for us. Pizza is surprisingly popular and we had that several times.
The apartment itself, as stated in the description, is not air conditioned but is very open, with ocean breezes blowing through. Every bedroom had a fan and we found the temperatures comfortable. There is a large picnic table and a comfortable hammock on the porches, which wrap around three sides of the building. The floors are all tile, so don't collect sand. There is a full size refrigerator that worked well and a full kitchen (although we did not cook while there). We had plates, glasses, sheets, blankets, extra towels, everything we needed. There was a washing machine that we used twice and hung our clothes out to dry on the clothes lines on the porch.
It took us about an hour to drive from the airport to Deshaies. It would have been faster, but we were slow going in the dark on unfamiliar roads. It was hard for us to find the property and our phones did not work, but we stopped at a restaurant in Deshaies to call our hosts and they immediately came to lead us back to the apartment, and welcome us.
We are now concluding our vacation on Grand-Terre, in the town of Gosier, and both agree that our time in Deshaies was probably the highlight of our trip. The secluded atmosphere, the natural beauty, and the incredible beach access made it an amazing vacation. We would recommend it and we hope to return next winter.
