‘Do the little things’ – St David

Living here on the Pembrokeshire coast means living in harmony with the land, the seasons and the rhythm of sea – and by doing so, we have all become so acutely aware of our impact on the environment and our responsibility to look after the incredible landscape, people and nature here.

We are committed to doing our little bit to live more sustainably and as our guests you are also doing your little bit too! By staying with us you are helping with many of our efforts, including funding our tree planting, and are contributing to responsible and sustainable tourism.

We still have so much we hope to achieve and will be adding more to this list over the coming months, but here are just some of the ways we are trying to be eco-conscious hosts:

– Thoughtful waste and recycling – we are proud that Pembrokeshire and Wales have some of the highest recycling targets in the world with Wales hoping to become a zero waste nation by 2050 with no waste ending up in landfill! We would so appreciate it if you can help us by recycling as much as possible in the bins provided – all easy to follow recycling info is in the cottages! We also love to fix, upcycle and repurpose where we can – and with my father, Mr Fix It on site – we always do what we can to repair and reuse before anything is wasted! We also make our own fabulous compost here – kitchen waste, old paper, chicken bedding, seaweed and more goes into making some magic soil for the veggies!

– Energy efficiency – with such gloriously thick old stone walls here, energy efficiency is always something we are looking to improve! However, where we can we added insulation whilst keeping as much of the wonderful old barn charm as possible. All new windows are double glazed and have been crafted by our incredibly talented carpenter Nigel, less than a mile away. We use a green energy supplier for our electricity and hope to have solar panels in the near future. All appliances are of the highest energy efficiency grade and all light bulbs are energy efficient LEDs. The wood provided for the log burners is well seasoned and locally and ethically sourced from Celtic Camping on the St Davids Peninsula. However, in order to offset our carbon completely, in March 2020 we started our own short rotational willow coppice for sustainable bio-fuel to fuel all the woodburners in the cottages and main farmhouse. These trees will be coppiced on a 5 year rotation. We have planted over 600 trees so far with a plan to plant close to 2000 trees by 2024!

– Reduce single use plastics – we have made a big commitment in our own lives to try and lose the plastic! Here are just some of the ways we are reducing our impact for our guests:

*Locally made plastic free soap and shampoo bars made by the lovely Paul from Six Foot and Clean less than a mile away! All natural and vegan friendly ingredients too!

*We try and keep all our hand soap, washing up liquid and cleaning products in recycled and / or refillable containers. The Ark in Haverfordwest offers some great zero waste refillable options which we use whenever we can.

*Washable and reusable eco kitchen sponges and microfibre towels are provided in the kitchen which can be used as an alternative to kitchen towel.

*Refillable cooking oil and condiments.

*Refillable glass milk bottles.

*Tupperware and foil (which can be recycled) are provided as alternatives to single use cling film.

*Reusable shopping bags are provided to save on plastic bags!

*Flasks are provided for you to use for your adventures – saving on those disposable water bottles and coffee cups!

*We provide sustainably sourced and recycled toilet roll – no plastic packaging!

– We think locally – all welcome treats and goodies in our Pantier Shed are as locally sourced as possible or even homemade – foraged and grown by us and our hens! 0 transport miles! We also try and keep the interior of the cottages as much a part of Pembrokeshire as the stone of the walls themselves – so much of the furniture and artwork in the cottages have been crafted and sourced as locally as possible. We have lots of suggestions of local walks, fabulous eateries that share our ethos and wonderful things to ‘sea’ and do in our guidebook – many within a short walk, cycle or drive from Pantier – and encourage you, if possible, to buy local food while staying with us; Nolton Cross Farm Shop offers a wonderful selection of sustainably farmed local meat and veg and there are lots of lovely local seafood options!

– We love + protect our beautiful natural environment here! – we are very mindful as to what goes down our sinks and into the air around us. Wherever possible our cleaning products and soaps are non-toxic and cruelty free. Nature is so important to us. We grow trees, including sycamores and oaks from our own seeds, which we plant in our local woodland and have attended a number of training workshops on trees, coppicing and woodland management. Every year we are also growing more of our own fruit and vegetables, which is incredibly exciting for us. Foraging is also something Anna has learnt (and continues to learn!) lots about over the last few years, please do have a read of our ‘A taste of the wild; recipes from the Pantier cupboard’ recipe book in the cottages for some inspiration! It’s such a great way to reconnect to nature. We also provide owl and bird boxes, insect houses and plant wildflowers here at Pantier. Do keep a look out for the incredible wildlife here – tawny owls, redkites, swallows and more are frequent visitors!

We also actively support a number of green initiatives locally, including local beach cleans (please join in with a 2 minute clean whenever you can! Look out for the boards and info at many of our local beaches – Nolton Haven and Newgale included). We are also so proud to be shareholders of the incredible Câr-y-Môr project – ‘For the Love of the Sea’. Câr-y-Môr has started the first commercial seaweed and shellfish farm in Wales on a site just off St Davids! This zero input farming is committed to growing seaweed forests for carbon offset and also for harvesting, with the potential to create biodegradable packaging and so much more. There are also plans to create a seafood market in St Davids with the sustainably fished scallops, mussels and fish which thrive within the seaweed farm. As well as offering local employment, they hope to run educational events and work with local schools.

Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire สหราชอาณาจักร

Pembrokeshire is a truly special place.

There is an aura here, a palpable excitement, a feeling that something quite extraordinary is around every corner - and there is. With 186 miles of breathtaking coastal path on offer, including over 50 stunning beaches, castles steeped in the most amazing myths and legends and world renowned island nature reserves, all stirred up with the friendliest and inspired bunch of people whose love for their county is infectious, you’ve struck holiday gold.

Your welcome pack in The Dairy is full to bursting with our own special top tips of all the things to see and do here, including our favourite days out and eateries - from beaches to castles, to museums, to wildlife parks, there is something for everyone at any time of year. Be sure to check out my Airbnb guidebook too - 'Mrs Jones' Pembrokeshire' - which includes lots of these lovely suggestions of fabulous things to 'sea' and do in the area with some local top tips thrown in too!

Below are just a few gorgeous ideas to get your Pembrokeshire adventure started!

LOCAL ADVENTURES

The Dairy is only a 1.5 mile drive to the stunning Blue Flag beach at Newgale. With its 2 miles of golden sand and a surf and watersports activity centre on site there is so much on offer for families, surfers and walkers alike - with the famous Pembrokeshire Coastal Path offering some of the most spectacular scenery in Wales. A hop, skip and a jump to the next cove, the small but beautiful beach of Nolton Haven, is a fabulous spot for a kayak at high tide and the local stables on site offer the most wonderful coastal hacks down to glorious Druidstone beach and beyond. Ever fancied an exhilarating gallop through the waves? Go on, now’s your chance!

For those in search of local craft, culture and foodie delights, we are only a short drive to the picturesque harbour village of Solva, perfect for some fish and chips and crabbing on the harbour, and charming St David’s, the smallest city in the UK but with the biggest of hearts. With its beautiful ancient cathedral, festivals, galleries, trendy shops and eateries, it’s a hub for art lovers and foodies alike. However, if you do find yourself feeling a little adventurous, why not hop on a boat trip to Ramsay Island. Dramatic caves and crystal blue waters full of dolphins, whales, puffins and seals, make for a trip to remember! When in Rome as they say ;)

Brandy Brook walk

If you fancy a local walk - the beautiful valley of Brandy Brook is only down the hill! So pack yourself a picnic and follow the beautiful stream towards the ruins of an old mill.

FURTHER AFIELD - NORTH AND SOUTH ADVENTURES

The Dairy is in the perfect location for exploring both north and south Pembrokeshire - with both areas offering up their own unique personalities. You may choose to head north in search of the rugged beauty of the northern coastline, the blue lagoon at Abereiddy or perhaps the wild and unique Preseli mountains, where Stonehenge’s blue stones originated, or head south and explore the Dale Peninsular, Skomer island and it’s remarkable puffins, Pembroke’s historic castle, or the soft golden sands of Tenby south beach.

Whether you’re after exhilarating adventures or life’s best and simple pleasures, whether it’s sea safaris rich with puffins and seals, surfing for the first time or long summer days at the beach, castle hopping, crabbing on the harbour, coastal walks and lingering pink-red sunsets, there is a Pembrokeshire holiday for everyone and our Coach House is the perfect place from which to discover, relax, rejuvenate, and just be together.

Shwmae (Welsh for hello!), I'm Anna! I live on a beautiful old farm in the most incredible coastal county in wild west Wales - Pembrokeshire - which in lots of ways is still being discovered, and this makes it such an exciting time to be hosting here! I am a lover of all things Pembrokeshire-inspired, long family days at the beach, a crab sandwich on the harbour, fresh eggs straight out the coop (yum!), sunset walks and a swim in the sea, at any time of year! My hosting journey is a true family affair – everything we have created here has been down to the unwavering support and hard work of my husband, children and parents - a three generation family living the Pembrokeshire dream!  But I wasn't always a host, in fact, I've had quite the change of career: corporate city lawyer turned sustainable host on the coast! We made the big move in February 2017. We'd been planning it for some time; it's been a 36 year long love affair with this special little corner of the world.   When we started this journey into hospitality, for us hosting was always going to be about connection and belonging. Before I became a host myself I'd used Airbnb numerous times as a guest and loved it: the direct interaction with hosts, the fact that there were so many well located and quirky properties on offer and that Airbnb offered a platform for hosts who cared deeply about connection and making any trip utterly memorable. My favourite Airbnb homes have soul - our listings are deeply rooted to the land and our love for our community here - and our Airbnb guests get that and that's a pretty special combination. Magic even! Quite simply, we just love what we do and it is our love for Pembrokeshire which is felt in every bit of your holiday experience with us - from the old Pembrokeshire stone of the cottage walls, to the colouring sheets of local rock pool creatures I've sketched for our younger guests, to the local soaps we source, to our own foraged sloe gin that greets our guests!  We live and breathe this beautiful county and are here to ensure you have the most amazing holiday, leaving with the biggest smiles on your faces and memories that will last a lifetime! Hosting has been such a personal journey too - I have become so entirely connected to and enriched by the land, the seasons, nature, the rhythm of the sea and the environment, something which mostly escaped me before - that we made a decision last year to really focus on making our listings more environmentally friendly and doing our bit to be sustainable hosts: from reducing our single use plastics to growing our own sustainable bio-fuel trees for our woodburners! I have also been so incredibly lucky to be one of the founding members of the Airbnb UK Community Board which started in 2019 and have been leading on sustainable hosting initiatives working with a number of UK hosts and the Airbnb team - we wrote a wonderful list of sustainable hosting tips and I recorded an eco-friendly hosting video both of which went out to all UK hosts! We can’t wait to welcome you here to our little slice of Pembrokeshire heaven!
