Comfortable clean house in a safe favela with a stunning view near the centre of Rio. Help sustain free music lessons for local children by staying in one of my rooms. A great way to get to know the community and contribute to it at the same time.
Spacious bedroom with comfortable double bed, large wardrobe and fan. The house is large with a well-equipped kitchen, bathroom, a communal washing machine and a great view of sugarloaf mountain.
Guests have access to the shared kitchen, bathroom and washing machine. I also provide bottled drinking water for the guests, because it isn't safe to drink the tapwater in Rio.
The level of interaction is completely up to the visitor. If you just want to use the house as a base with a basic level of interaction that's absolutely fine with me. However, as a musician I can also give good hints about upcoming music events and I invite guests along when I'm playing at local samba and jazz shows (with absolutely no obligation!)
On Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays I invite the local kids into the house for music lessons between 4:30pm and 8:30pm as part of a social project called Favela Brass (searchable on the internet). Anyone interested in Brazilian music and percussion, is welcome to watch or participate in the lessons. Again, not obligatory.
Every so often we do a fundraising curry night here which is great fun and wraps up by 11pm. Guests eat for free at this event.
Please note that this house is a music school which operates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8:30pm and is full of the sound of kids learning to play music at these times.
***My room is right next to the kitchen and the sound travels between the two. Please do not use the kitchen unless absolutely necessary between 11pm at night and 7:30am during the week and before 9am at weekends. I hope that sounds reasonable!***
Absolutely no drugs in the house please (on a practical level we are a school and the local parents won't send their children here if they suspect that people are taking drugs here)
Please don't waste energy by leaving lights/fans on when you're out
Don't bring guests in without prior warning (security)
No smoking in the house
Guests assume their share of responsibility for keeping the house clean and tidy
Please bear other guests' needs in mind when putting things in the fridge, and only eat your stuff!
35 year-old British musician living in Rio de Janeiro since 2008. I play trumpet and trombone with various jazz and samba ensembles around the city and am working on a project to teach the children in the favela where I live to play brass and percussion instruments. I also like to cook Indian food (almost as much as I like to eat it!)
