The house was perfectly located for my needs. There is a large but very friendly and well trained dog. He was the high point of my visit. Alana communicated that she had been up all night and was going to bed, so I didn't see her at check in. That was OK with me, as I just needed…

Becky, I'm so sorry to hear that our accommodations did not live up to your expectations. There's certainly a lot to cover but let me start by saying that the brand name "Airbnb" may be a little misleading to first-timers. I know you said that this was your first booking through the site so you may not have been unaware of the fact that breakfast is not a standard offering as most Airbnb hosts actually do NOT offer it. Particularly at a competitive pricepoint like mine. You CAN, however, narrow your search results by those that do, or by other preferred features/amenities (such as those that have TVs, provide a lock on the bedroom door, or that have heating) when selecting an Airbnb in the future. Please also note that the listing for this accommodation specifies no parking in the driveway as those spaces are designated for house residents and the parking lot is so close you could literally throw a stone at any car on the lot from the front doorstep. I wish Airbnb did a better job at bringing these details out for guests but I did my best to make sure this was clear in my listing, even notating the parking pass instructions. I'm sorry if this was unclear. Our philosophy is to give guests their privacy until they get settled so they don't have to feel like big brother is 'watching' or 'judging' them as a stranger in their home. When people are first introduced to their new environment, we tend to let them settle in in the 'safe space' of their private bedroom and then branch out from there once they reach a certain level of comfort. I can see how this might be construed to some as lack of attentiveness to guests, but most of the people that we host seem to value their privacy so this is a double-edged sword when other guests prefer a more communal or structured environment. This balance is particularly tricky to strike with stays like yours that are only for one night because we don't have time to get a good feel for the guest's preferences. As far as towels, coffee, hall lights, and window blinds, there were towels in the closet of the bedroom you stayed in, the coffee pods were in the standard Keurig cup holder drawer that the coffee pot was sitting on and was filled with a wide variety of coffee, tea, cider, and hot chocolate flavors to choose from, the light switch for the hallway is located directly outside of the door to the room you stayed in, and the blinds are the standard window blinds with a pull string you'll also see in the listing's pictures. I'm sorry that I did not provide written instructions outlining some of these things. I've never had anyone indicate they had difficulties locating them but I will certainly reconsider this moving forward. I do have a house manual that covers some of the basics such as the wifi password and door code but I will look into adding additional information like this as well. I also welcome questions from guests via text 24 hours a day (response times may vary or be delayed during work/sleeping hours/etc. of course) and would have been happy to let you know how to find what you were looking for had you asked. Regarding the barren room and the steep steps...the room is the exact same decor as featured in the pictures (as it always is with the exception of the occasional quilt/duvet cover change when we have back to back guests), and the steps (which are standard step height) are also pictured in the listing. I also marked this room as requiring stairs. Touching on the 'cluttered' and 'messy' condition of the house, the important thing to remember about booking through sites like Airbnb is that you're staying in someone's home which means you always run the risk of the space being in a state of flux from day to day as people live their lives. For this reason, the home may not always look like it would be pictured in a magazine or even in the listing the way you would expect at a traditional hotel. We do our best to keep our home clean and suitable for guests upon arrival but as the condition of the home varies, so too do the expectations of our guests. In your particular case, we had just pulled out Halloween decorations and had not finished decorating by the time you arrived as we had expected which, agreeably, made the house less picturesque than normal as we tried to find other temporary 'homes' for our regular decor. I'm sorry that you felt this equated to clutter and do apologize for any inconvenience you felt it may have caused. As far as the cleaning fee goes, most guests we've had tend to book for much longer periods of time and at this time, Airbnb does not give hosts a great way to tailor that fee to the situation nor do they provide much guidance on how to set those costs. The same thing applies with the security deposit. I chose that fee amount based on what I found to be standard in the area so as to set a competitive rate in relation to the market. Is it possible that the dirt was tracked in from your shoes? I'm sorry if you felt the floors were anything less than spotless but I assure you the rooms are always vacuumed and swiffered prior to the arrival of our visitors. None the less, to make it up to you I'd like to offer you a free night stay the next time you come into town to visit your daughter. I hope that you'll find your next booking to be a much more enjoyable experience once I have a chance to evaluate and implement your feedback. Again, I apologize that this stay did not meet your expectations! I hope the wedding went off without a hitch! Alana
