Five 8-mat tatami rooms with bathrooms on 1st floor. Many English and Japanese picture books, puppets and toys. Kitchen and lots of shared living space. Large parking area. Relax, play or work in this 70-year old traditional Japanese home. Recently remodeled. Hot springs (9-min walk), Kyoto-style garden next door, and large park with playgrounds and pools (7-min walk). Grocery stores and pharmacy within walking distance. Bus or drive to well-known sightseeing, culture and nature spots in Gunma.
The interior has large wooden beams and Japanese tatami. So, you feel like you are in a true Japanese environment. The house was used for silk production. Gunma was the center of Japan for mechanized silk weaving, and the UNESCO World Heritage Tomioka Silk Mill is a 40-min drive, and the Nippon Silk Center only 10. The shared living space is well-furnished, so you can enjoy a comfortable Japanese “hori kotatsu” where you can sit on cushions on tatami, but put your legs down comfortably. In the winter, it is heated and you can stay warm with a blanket around the table. The kitchen is large and has a table that seats 6. Stove, oven, microwave, blender and all basic cooking utensils available. The living room upstairs has a large comfortable leather sofa, play area with toys for children. There is a dining room table upstairs as well. There are 4 8-mat tatami rooms on the first floor with lots of English books. If not being used by others, you can enjoy reading, stretching or yoga. Yoga mats available (please wipe down after use). There are 2 bathrooms with washout toilets, and one urinal. The bath is modern and large. The bedroom has a lock on the inside and out for privacy. There are also lockers with locks available on the first and second floor entrances.
Guests have the privacy of their own bedroom. They can use any common space, like the kitchen/dining room, tatami room with kokatsu table, large tatami rooms if not in use by another group, bath and washing machine area, 3 bathrooms (2 washlet toilets & 1 urinal), playroom & dining table area, living room with large sofa.
We make efforts to greet our guests and show them the property. We live nearby, and often use the home as our office is on the second floor and our family loves to go there to relax and enjoy the hot spring, Maneki no Yu, that is down the street. As there are 4 rooms available for different groups, there is a chance you will meet other guests.
Even though this is a shared house, you can enjoy a lot of privacy as you have your own room and there are lots of shared rooms. Plenty of space for everyone!
We just finished the first stage of remodeling this 71-year old house. We have yet to have the Japanese shoji doors repaired, so for now the 4 tatami rooms that make a square are open, and some of the shoji separating the room and the engawa sunroom area are not fixed.
This is an old house that was built for natural ventilation. It also has a very heavy tile roof, so it stays quite cool in the summer and warm in the winter. We use fans and open windows instead of air conditioning. Also, we dust and vacuum the house regularly, but because of the traditional construction of small cracks for ventilation, the house gets dusty very quickly. If this bothers you, please wipe off surfaces and vacuum as necessary during your stay.
Thank you for your understanding!
No alcohol, smoking or drugs allowing in the house or on the property.
Quiet hours 9pm-8am.
No shoes in the house. Please leave in the entry hall. Slippers available.
Wash body in shower area before entering bath.
Indoor stairs are very steep. Please use handrail and assist children.
The tatami and shoji (paper doors) should be treated with care.
This is a historical house. Please treat it with respect.
