FALL BONUS: Voyagers can visit our Atelier le Loft art studio!
Our home was built in 1900 in the Biarritz Style, which was all the rage for weekend homes of the nouveaux riche. This historical architectural style includes: artisanal hand-crafted “rocaille” -- decorative sculpted “faux bois” that imitate beech and birch trees.
The story of rue du Mascaret:
The word “mascaret” is the name of the Atlantic Ocean “reflux tide”, a twice yearly event at the Spring Equinox and Fall Equinox, when the moon’s pull is greatest, when the incoming tide flows upriver in a tidal wave!! It’s a popular local event to watch the mascaret tide and its surfers from the shore of the Garonne River.
History of the home:
When we bought the Mascaret home in 2007, it was all black with windows and doors broken, and the garden piled high with trash. Both visual artists (our art studio is in the nearby Atelier le Loft), it was obvious that this was a historical home. Since then, we have lovingly renovated it little by little, improving something each year.
Opening the apt to the Airbnb community for the first time is a new adventure. Please be tolerant of debutant mistakes!
The latest renovations of the Mascaret home have been: restoring the hand-crafted “rocaille” by a certified historical artisan, and repainting the house exterior. Your participation in renting the apt will help immensely!
On its way to being 100% ecological:
The Mascaret home is on its way to becoming an “eco-lodge” -- renovation materials have been 99% organic, and the garden, cleaning, and washing products are all organic and bio-degradable.
The 50m2 (450 sq ft) 2 bedroom apartment has been renovated with the simplicity of the beach cottage style, and it’s naturally cool in summer with “French air conditioning” -- naturally insulating thick walls, and keeping windows and shutters closed to the sun on hot summer days. With windows front and back, there is a good airflow and natural light.
The Mascaret garden:
The natural garden 80m2 (720 sq ft) is a delight all day long, and in the evening for "apero" cocktails and dinner in the garden, since the sky stays light well after sunset.
This is an organic natural garden with no pesticides or chemical fertilizers. In 2007 nothing would grow, but we've improved it year by year with compost, and let natural endemic "weeds" mix with plantations. You are welcome to use the aromatic herbs and edible flowers in cooking or to make sachets: oregano, mountain savory, sage.
The 2nd floor apartment is rented to two students.
Everyone shares the garden. The main entrance is by the front gate on the street, through the garden, to both apartments.
The ground floor front terrace and the tiny courtyard in back go with the ground floor apartment.
At the apartment, there are: Bordeaux City Maps, Maps of the Bordeaux/Aquitaine region, a notebook with: House Rules, Information about Bordeaux, Activities. Also - Le Petit Futé guidebook to Bordeaux.
