Shearwater Cove is a small, secluded cove 10 miles by water from Seward, Alaska in Resurrection Bay. The adventure begins by meeting Shearwater's hosts Jason and Charity in the Seward Small Boat Harbor where guests embark on Shearwater's exclusive water taxi, the M/V Steller Jay. En route to Shearwater Cove, guests enjoy the spectacular scenery and marine wildlife of the Kenai Fjords from the deck and cabin of the vessel. Upon arrival at Shearwater Cove guests are given an orientation about the property. Guests have access to hiking trails on the surrounding property, and can explore the coastline and Shearwater's neighboring coves and islands in sea kayaks at their leisure. Guided kayaking sessions are available for an additional charge. If anyone in your group is new to kayaking or wants to learn more about Shearwater's plants, animals, and geology, send us a message requesting a guided kayaking session.
Inside the yurt is a queen bed, heater, shelf for books and games, battery powered lantern, and a dining table and chairs. On the yurt's deck is a private outdoor kitchen outfitted with a propane stove top, sink with running water, pots, pans, cutlery, olive oil, salt and pepper, and an ice chest for keeping refrigerated goods cool. Guests bring their own food and ice. Also on the yurt's deck is a private composting toilet. This yurt does not have hot water or a shower.
Shearwater Cove is entirely off the grid. Electricity is not available so please note that you will be unable to charge phones, cameras, and electronics. We recommend bringing a small battery pack for charging devices, or totally immerse and go without! There are a few flights of stairs from the dock at Shearwater Cove to your yurt so please keep this in mind as you pack. We highly recommend light luggage/backpacks. We understand that people often spend a few weeks in Alaska and therefore bring a bit of luggage, so we encourage guests to sort through their belongings and bring only what they will need while at the yurts. Seward's parking lots are highly monitored by city staff and belongings will be safe in your car. If you do not have a car we are happy to store luggage for you with advance notice.
Guests have unlimited access to Shearwater Cove's sea kayaks for exploring the coastline and to hiking trails that offer panoramic views of Resurrection Bay (and excellent berry picking!). The sea kayaks are available for use at your leisure, so take a paddle in the midnight sun or stay out all day and picnic on the Fox Island Spit and watch the salmon jump in Humpy Cove! We highly encourage guests to book a 2 night stay to take advantage of the kayaking value and immerse in the setting of the Kenai Fjords.
Hosts Jason and Charity are available by phone and email for any questions prior to your stay. Upon booking we will send a message including specific details of where to park and meet on the morning of your check-in and recommended items to bring. Jason is your USCG licensed boat captain. Upon your arrival at Shearwater Cove, Jason and/or Charity will provide an orientation about the Cove, your yurt, how to use/store the kayaks, and our hiking trails. We stay with guests overnight at Shearwater Cove as much as we can, but if we are unable to stay we will do everything possible to ensure guest comfort and safety before departing for the night. We have two other yurts on the property so other guests may be present.

Our price reflects the added value of this scenic 40 minute tour of the Kenai Fjords en route to Shearwater Cove. There are no roads to the property so all guests will arrive by boat. Price also includes use of Shearwater's sea kayaks and access to hiking trails. Here is a price comparison of typical lodging, water taxi, and kayak trip prices in Seward for two guests to compare with Shearwater Cove's all-inclusive price: -Basic hotel: $300/night -Roundtrip Water Taxi Transport: $140 -Resurrection Bay Kayaking day trip: $400 Total: $840 (this does not include eating out) Staying with us at Shearwater Cove not only cuts your vacation cost in half, but provides an authentic Alaskan experience led by your hosts Jason and Charity as you explore the Kenai Fjords at your own pace and get immersed in the wilderness away from big tourism companies.
**Important Check-in/Check-out information** Our boat, Steller Jay, will depart the Seward harbor at either 10am or 12pm on the morning of your check-in, and you will depart Shearwater Cove at either 8:30am or 11am on the morning of your check-out. We will confirm your water taxi times upon booking. The water taxi ride is about 45 minutes each way. If you have specific travel plans let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your scheduling needs. While planning activities following check-out, please give yourself an extra 1-2 hours of wiggle room. Shearwater Cove is a remote location that is only accessible by boat and weather conditions may delay or slow down the ride back to town. Give yourself an extra hour or two of time to transition into your next activity/destination so that in the case of delay you do not miss your next activity or stress about time. Much of the beauty and awesome experience of Shearwater Cove is due to its being removed from the busy city life to which so many of us are accustomed. Please remember that travel time to and from these types of places can vary because of that wonderful quality. Due to the inherent risks of boat transportation and remote lodging, all guests will be required to sign an Acknowledgement of Risks and Release of Liabilities Form prior to trip departure.
