Lakeview cottage is a cosy, quirky, listed, two-bedroomed retreat in the heart of Ireland. It was built as a Gate House in the 18th century and has been lovingly restored. It is the last house on one of the lanes with access to Lough Derravaragh just 200 yards from the lake. Approximately one and a half hours from Dublin via the N4 motorway.
We are delighted you are considering staying in our self-catering cottage. The downstairs is spacious, with two bedrooms upstairs and it is set in a stunning location in the Irish countryside, just 200 metres from Lough Derravaragh in a Natural Heritage Area for peatlands and birds.
The cottage is just 15 minutes from the N4 which crosses Ireland linking Dublin on the east coast to Sligo on the west It is situated about 90 minutes from the centre of Dublin.
Downstairs is open plan, with a feature corner window in the kitchen with beautiful views down to the Lake. Cosy evenings can be spent on one of the sofas around the large wood burning stove. There is a television if you want watch, but there are also board games and books for you to enjoy.
The large bathroom is downstairs and is a wetroom/bathroom. There is also a storage area for your cases, coats and shoes etc.
Going up the stairs you will find two bedrooms. You pass through the double room to the second bedroom with twin beds.
Outside there is large garden with seating, a barbeque and secure parking as well as those beautiful, uninterrupted views of the lake.
If you like to get away from it all then this is paradise: no traffic noise and no light pollution: perfect for an all year round get-away. Lakeview Cottage is ideal for touring , bird-watching, walking, fishing or for just switching off and doing nothing. On those wet and windy winter days there is nothing better than curling up by the wood-burning stove, which keeps the cottage warm and cosy.
For fishermen Lough Ennel, Lough Owel and Lough Sheelin are also nearby as well as many locations along the River Inny (subject to fishing licence). For lets of seven days or more there is a fishing boat available for Lough Derravaragh, subject to insurance.
The nearest village is Coole, which is a tiny village with a few small local shops and a Post Office.
You will find more on offer in Castlepollard, just a five minute drive away. There are more shops, take-aways, restaurants, pubs and a Tesco Local supermarket.
Multyfarnham is about 10 minutes in the other direction and has two award-winning restaurants and two fabulous, traditional pubs.
Mullingar is half an hour away and is one of Ireland’s nicest towns. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants to choose from, along with individual shops and boutiques, Mullingar Arts Centre and a multi-screen cinema. See where James Joyce worked and lived as a young man.
Look out for an array of summer arts, music and heritage festivals in the local area.
