My husband and I, Dr. Alastair Pirie, made our first trip to Zanzibar and in particular our present, home village of Jambiani in 1997 as part of a one year sabbatical. Needless to say we were pretty impressed by the outstanding natural beauty of this island getaway but also by the friendly and easy going nature of its local population.
We returned in 1999 and spent 4 months helping in the local hospital.
It was during this time we decided to establish our NGO, Hands Across Borders Society, and in 2000 we made the massive decision to move here permanently from our home in Canada.
The two main projects are the Jambiani Tourism Training Institute and the Jambiani Wellness Centre. Our volunteer program of teachers and healthcare professionals ensures that we have a constant stream of new and interesting individuals who bring their hearts and minds to help the people here. All our programs are free as they help the people who need it most; who would otherwise not be able to obtain the education or health care that they need. By staying at Alibi's Well, you are contributing to the sustainability of our projects and directly supporting the students and patients.
