This is our beach 'shack'. It's basic but functional - just like we believe a holiday cottage should be. Nestled against the mountain in St James, with 180 degree views of the bay. Set back just 100m from the sea; 500m from St James beach and tidal pools, surfer's corner at Muizenberg beach; and 2km from Kalk Bay harbour - a pleasant walk along the shore to my favourite shops and restuarants in Cape Town.
We recently purchased this lovely original old cottage and it will be our retirement home in 10 years time. We have some big renovation plans that will have to wait but in the meantime, use it on weekends and accasional mid-week breaks to escape the City (just 25 minutes away) where we live. It has everything we need (gas hob, electric oven, fridge, toaster, etc, but it is basic and we have just gotten started with decorating and hanging art - so its a work in progress.
Note, you cannot drive up to the house and there is no wheelchair access. You either park in public parking on Main Road (or in our secure parking garage) and walk about 100m, up some 30 steps to the cottage. The house has good security (burglar bars and security doors as well as an alarm system and response system which you can set when you go out.
The whole house is yours, including surf boards, bicycles - and a locked garage.
We live in Cape Town and intend to leave you to yourselves. Don't expect chocolates on your pillows at night but for real problems (like a meteor through the roof) Gert - our trusted handy man is on call. He will also meet you on arrival and departure. I'm happy to share advice on great restaurants and places to visit in the area.
Note that if you plan to be coming over the December holidays and some summer weekends, traffic along the main road can get congested. You are out of the worst of it on this end of St James (it gets much worse towards Kalk Bay) but if you are planning on a drive around the peninsula, best you get going before 10AM. You do not want to sit in a mid-day traffic jam on your holiday.

Father of three, happily married (to their mother). Trained as a lawyer but at heart a frustrated architect. Have had three careers: first as a human rights lawyer, then as a manager of development aid in public (governance) education and most recently running a non-profit company working on climate change and energy. Have lived in Kenya and the States, and travelled extensively in Africa and Europe. Happiest when enmeshed in building renovation projects, of which our beautiful old Victorian house is the most endearing. We have a relaxed and slightly eccentric life - two dogs and lots of teenagers who come and go.
