Sarsaparilla Sanctuary is a 147 acre Rainforest Reserve and Wildlife Habitat. It is at the end of the road- has NO neighbours and is totally surrounded by Tully Falls National Park. The property has the origins of the spring fed Vine Creek from which all of the water in the house comes from.
The bird life and wild life is amazing!
The cozy modern house is set up for a romantic getaway for mature couples or the mature solo traveller looking for a secluded retreat. It has timber floors, new carpet to the bedroom, a fully reclinable leather couch - made in Australia! & a lovely wood fire available for use. There is a huge deck which puts you at canopy height so you can sit and observe the multitudes of birds that inhabit the area, the possums at night and maybe the odd tree kangaroo.
A wander down to the creek at night with spotlights will reveal the wildlife peering down at you from the trees, maybe a cute rabbit on the grass and if you're lucky at dawn or dusk possibly a platypus in the creek.
Vine Creek wraps around the house and guests are able to follow a steep path down to a large waterhole just behind the house. There is a short walk on the bottom section to another waterhole. Both waterholes are spring fed making the water a beautiful azure colour.
Guests are free to use the house as their own. This is also our home so we are very careful with who we allow to share the space. We live here one week out of every two. The telephone is free for interstate and local calls only. No mobile or overseas numbers to be dialled.
There is a number provided for help if needed.
DO NOT GO WANDERING OFF INTO THE BUSH! There are two walking tracks along the creek which are safe to wander along. There is easy access to the creek for a swim but any meanderings off into the wilderness could potentially be dangerous.
There are leeches and ticks in the area depending on the season. If you go walking check yourself upon returning for these lovely bush creatures. Salt works wonders on leeches. Ticks - use alcohol swabs (provided) to soak them first and then remove by pulling directly off with tweezers. There is a bottle of lavender essential oil also provided for relief of any insect bites and a comprehensive first aid kit available as well. Some locals recommend spraying your walking shoes with insect repellent before meandering.
- No fires without prior arrangement

Jen & Rob have been Aussie residents for over 30 years. Both originally from NZ. Rob is a carpenter and Jen a business owner of Ambition Uniforms in Cairns.
We spend half of our time at Sarsaparilla Sanctuary and the rest in Cairns. We enjoy tending both of our lovely gardens and growing delicious food!
