Kew Village has several small cafes / restaurants. Tap on the Line (right by the station) does good coffee all day and reasonably priced lunch / dinner. The Inn (almost opposite) has a lovely relaxed atmosphere for an evening drink. Kew Green is about ten minutes' walk away and has some delightful pubs. The National Archive at the Public Records Office nearby often has free exhibitions.
Richmond has lots of shops, restaurants, cinemas and famous
Take the District Line train to South Kensington for the museums (including V&A). Go on to Westminster and you can walk up to Leicester Square and Piccadilly / Covent Garden, or cross the river to the Millenium Eye and South Bank complex (National Theatre).
