This place is known by many names, the surf break right outside is Shark Alley, the Point is Shakespeare Point and the Maori name Waitemataku. We have our own beach, but are just a stroll to Medlands main beach. The view is the best in Medlands
We are private but close to Medlands main beach. Our aspect is perfect for view and sun. The entire Point is available for walking and exploring, we own it! The house is new and comfortable with its own deck and lawns.
Due to council laws, the kitchen is equipped only with a 2 burner portable gas stove and there is a barbecue outside as well.
There is an electric fridge.
The house is run by solar power and gas with rain tank water only. Resources need to be conserved. We are totally off the grid except for excellent public mobile reception ,3G telecom & vodafone.
Access is from the walking bridge at the end of Sandhills Rd. You will usually be met there by your host and taken to the house ( it is a 10 m stroll) It is possible to drive across the beach at low tide in a 4WD, but hire companies do not allow it. We can arrange hire of cars, just ask when you book ;)
The surf and sea is on your doorstep. If you need toys, they can be arranged for appropriate Koha(rental).
The house has access to the walking tracks around the property and private beach.
A full range of stunning walks and other activities, such as the hot pools, around the Island can be got from the I Site office at the airport. Claris has an interesting art gallery, cafe, food store and liquor outlet. Tryphena, the main village, is over the hill from Medlands ( about 15m drive) and has other cafes, the Irish Pub, plus artists, stores etc.
I and friends are often next door. You are welcome to join us for a coffee or wine .
We value what Barrier still has to offer and are actively conserving remaining wildlife with predator eradication and replanting of beneficial native trees.
You may see the very rare nocturnal Pateke ( brown teal) that breeds here now and the ground dwelling Rail. Other native birds are regular visitors, including Kaka, Tui and our native wood pigeon.
We expect you to have a good time. Accidents do sometimes happen so you must pay a damage bond and we will have professional cleaners come after you. Fire is a threat so you can not set any fires and flames must be treated with care.
The house is non smoking.
Other than that, enjoy, it is a great place !
I am a keen waterman, especially surfing and love the outdoors, which is why I feel so at home on Great Barrier where I feel closest to nature .
I enjoy friends and keeping good company , sharing fun, wine & food.
