Our home is in a quiet residential street, close to the beach, the markets, parks, cafes and restaurants. The bedroom is in the old part of the house with a 4-meter (12-foot) ceiling, double bed, closet space, and an adjacent private bathroom. Our garden has several olive trees, grape vines, citrus trees, and organic vegetables. You can walk to the Old City of Jaffa, to the beach, and to the local bus to Tel Aviv (a 10-minute ride). Perfect for couples, solo adventurers, and business travellers.

From the moment you walk through our front gate, canopied with bougainvillea, you are transported to another world. The path to our front door meanders through some olive trees and our organic vegetable garden. A few lemon and orange trees line one side and you enter our porch through a canopy of grape vines.

Your host, Fred, is a skilled carpenter, and the woodwork in this lovingly renovated old home was ‘upcycled’ wood, recrafted into unique doorframes, bookshelves and architectural renderings. The large hallway at the entrance to the home was repurposed into a library with floor to ceiling bookshelves and an eclectic collection of artwork. You are welcome to borrow books during your visit.

Your bedroom is the master suite of the house, made vacant when the owners are abroad (4-5 months of the year). The owner’s daughter, or a local live-in caretaker, will be available to make you comfortable and provide you with information about local activities, buses etc.

You will have a private bedroom with a 4-meter (12 feet) ceiling and private bathroom - entirely your private space. Of course you will also have full access to the kitchen, main salon, and the patio and garden where you may end up spending most of your time, especially when the weather is nice - which is most of the time.

You'll have full access to the vegetarian kitchen. Meat can be cooked on the outdoor grill.

Your hosts, Fred & Sunita, will be touring abroad during your stay, and a responsible caretaker will share the home with you.

Our two dogs and two cats will also be in residence. Feel free to walk the dogs if you like. Just keep in mind that we do have litter pickup regulations in Jaffa, so you need to take along some plastic bags to ‘Scoop the Poop’. If you choose, you can allow the dogs to sleep in your bedroom. They'll like that. Just don’t allow them on the bed. If you do not want animals in your room, then keep the door closed at all times.

Fred's mother's family have lived in the country for over 200 years, first under the Ottomans, then the British, and now as Israelis. He was born in Scotland and lived in several European countries and the USA, before settling back to Israel. Although Fred started his adult life as a well digger, artist and construction laborer, he became an an award-winning serial entrepreneur with an eclectic career, building businesses and NGOs in home building, disaster/emergency construction, political action, the entertainment industry, tourism and fair trade.

Fred founded and continues to manage the Green Olive Collective, a Palestinian/Israeli organisation with Arab and Jewish Working Partners. They conduct cultural and political tours, fair trade merchandising, and a volunteer program. Take a look at Green Olive Tours on the internet for details about their interesting 'off the beaten track' tours that can help enhance your trip.

Fred also is an avid cyclist, juggler, gardener, and a black belt in Shotokan Karate. Many years ago Fred and his wife Sunita spent a year travelling around the world as troubadours & street performers. Although they have since settled down and raised a family, their adventurous spirit continues to inform their lives which are full of travel, new experiences, and civic action.

Sunita Staneslow is a renowned harpist and you will often hear her practising in the apartment. She teaches harp at 'Ayelet's String' ( Tel Aviv Harp Centre), teaches via , performs at events, concerts and festivals, and spends one day a week on staff as a therapeutic musician at a local hospital. A couple of times a year she travels abroad to teach and perform at music camps and festivals in Europe and the USA - and as a tour leader in her 'Roots of the Harp' tours to Scotland and other countries for harp students, professionals and aficionados. Sunita is also a key organiser of the Jaffa Harp Festival, and has published numerous music books and CDs. Her work is easy to find with a simple search of 'Sunita harp'. To keep fit Sunita runs, participates in triathlons, and practices yoga. She also sings in a local choir.

Their daughter Maya is studying naturopathy, reflexology and physical fitness at the Wingate Institute. She is also teaches yoga at studios in Jaffa and Netanya. Maya spent a good part of last summer taking an advanced program of Ashtanga Yoga in Mysore, India. She is a good resource to find out about Tel Aviv's nightlife, and fun things to do.

Fred and Sunita recently travelled on their tandem bicycle over 4,000 kilometres through 16 countries in Europe and the Middle East. Fred has also taken solo self-sufficient cycling trips in Palestine/Israel, Ethiopia, the Kingdom of Jordan, Colorado, and Scotland.
