About the Design of the House: Our family has been intimately involved in every detail of the construction of the home you see today—from concept to final finishing. We put a lot of care into choosing the land, the design, exact position and placement of our house. We used the principles of “The Pattern Language” by architect and design theorist Christopher Alexander as our guide. These patterns empower anyone, or any group of people, to create beautiful, functional, meaningful, inviting spaces. To share just a few of Alexander’s patterns, windows should have low sills with comfy chairs nearby to pull up for watching the outside world go by, roofs and ceilings should feel sheltering, and there should be an emphasis on communal gathering within, but with private restful corners to nestle into. We’ve tried to bring his human-scale, livable patterns into this home, with generous windows and sills, inviting book nooks, comfy chairs of all types and sizes, open staircases, covered porches, gradually thickening walls, and seating in the bedrooms for quiet retreat. Our wish is that this house shelter our family for generations, while offering a quiet, cozy and uncomplicated break from the world to all those souls who step through its doorways.
Your parking space (two cars max) is beside the pebbled walkway and arbour that leads up to the suite. Enter the suite via the private entrance on the gated patio. An electronic lock requires a pass code that will be provided upon arrival.

Our neighbourhood is friendly and quiet, so we ask guests to respect this, particularly after 8 pm. Our guests find the large private deck is ideal for quiet conversation, relaxation and enjoying the view.
Pender Harbour Fire Protection rules must be followed: no open flames of any sort including campfires, torches, fireworks, etc. (In our suite, we have provided LED candles as a safe alternative to traditional candles for your evening’s enjoyment.)

We built our home here in Pender Harbour to have nature at our doorstep and be close to forest hiking, pristine lakes and the seaside. To live as sustainably as we can, we drive electric and leverage technology as much as possible as we scratch out vegetables, herbs and an orchard from our rocky soil, irrigated by rainwater harvested from our metal roof. We grow quite a bit of our own food. The rest comes from local merchants and the fishing community here whenever possible. Carol (with support from Cliff) works on developing books (20 so far) in our home office-library on how to grow food, support bees, eat weeds and live a little more sustainably. We have three adult children in university.
Very importantly, we want any space we share to be one that we love ourselves, so we’ve put lots of TLC into our guest suite. Cliff has built the bathroom and kitchen cabinets from scratch, along with the living room furniture and tables in the Pine Bedroom, with fir and maple harvested, milled and aged on this property. And we have upcycled wherever we can, and worked throughout the suite with natural materials like cotton, jute and sisal. We hope you enjoy your stay here!
