Room is an industrial “Living Museum” located in Japan’s oldest surviving public housing, built in 1948. It preserves the atmosphere of post-war Nagasaki, reflecting everyday life shaped by concrete and industry in island-based communities around the city, including Hashima Island. Authentic Showa-era furnishings create a tactile sense of the past, balanced with modern comforts (Wi-Fi, A/C)

Room 220, affectionately called the “Castella Room,” is a private unit consisting of two Japanese-style rooms (8-tatami and 6-tatami). It can accommodate up to five guests.

While preserving authentic Showa-era fittings, furnishings, and lighting, the room is fully equipped with modern amenities: kitchen, toilet, bathroom, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, refrigerator, washing machine, and microwave. The retro interior, highlighted by mid-Showa design, harmonizes beautifully with contemporary functionality, ensuring a comfortable stay for both short and long-term visits.

Located only a two-minute walk from City Hall, the apartment remains quiet and peaceful, offering guests a nostalgic “time-trip” experience in the heart of Nagasaki.

Room 220 is entirely private and completely separated from the adjacent Room 219 (“Karasumi Room”) with its own entrance.

※ About the name “Castella”:
Castella is Nagasaki’s traditional sponge cake, originally introduced by Portuguese missionaries and traders from the Kingdom of Castile (present-day Spain) in the mid-16th century. Over 400 years, it developed uniquely in Nagasaki and became one of Japan’s most beloved sweets nationwide. This room is named after castella to honor that heritage.

As Japan’s oldest surviving apartment complex, modeled as a setting in the works of Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro, and as a faithful recreation of life in mid-Showa Japan, this is truly a one-of-a-kind accommodation offering an experience found nowhere else in the world.

“Retro48 Nagasaki” is an accommodation that recreates the lifestyle of Japan’s housing complexes from the 1950s–70s. Inside the unit, you will find period appliances and daily items on display. Some items marked as usable may be handled, but please note that certain old appliances cannot be used for safety reasons. We cannot take responsibility for accidents such as electrical shorts—please enjoy these items as décor only. Do not remove or take any furnishings or items home, and please handle them with care to avoid damage.

The entire facility is strictly non-smoking. Smoking is prohibited not only inside the rooms, but also in stairways, hallways, and all shared areas of the complex. Guests who wish to smoke are kindly asked to use the designated smoking area within “Uon-machi+.”

Please separate trash into burnable and non-burnable and place it in the mesh box in front of the bathroom. After 10:00 p.m., as this is a residential neighborhood, we ask you to keep noise to a minimum.

If any furnishings are damaged or stains occur that cannot be removed with normal cleaning during your stay, please contact us immediately by message. Depending on the situation, additional charges may apply. If damage or unremovable stains are discovered without prior notice, we may charge the replacement cost of the item, additional cleaning fees, or sheet replacement fees.
