Our place is in a quiet neighborhood, but close to shopping (5 minute walk), city center (20 minute walk, quicker by bike or car), public transport (3 minute walk to bus), family-friendly activities & nightlife. Good for couples, families with kids, business travelers, & we welcome pets. PLEASE NOTE there is no TV, but good wifi so you can watch streaming video on your devices. (Slight changes since photo taken of kitchen; see notes below.)
Modern house, built in 2011. Lots of light, but also ways to block light in the 3 bedrooms so you can fall asleep and stay asleep on spring/summer mornings. Large open-plan downstairs has comfortable couches, lots of chairs and a desk; ideal for large families. High ceilings, and the stairs are relatively wide and not too steep (as compared to other Dutch stairs.) See other benefits below.
Guests may access the entire house, with only these exceptions: If you are bringing bikes, we'll just need to make arrangements for where to keep our bikes. We will provide you with some closet space. Because we are a family of four, we will need to keep most of our stuff in closets, drawers, etc. and we just ask that you respect our things and our privacy.
Our house is only available when we are away. But we are reachable, if you have any questions and our neighbors are friendly.
~We both speak English, and my husband also speaks Dutch, German, Spanish and French. If it is easier for you, feel free to contact us in one of those languages.
~Check-in & Check-out times are very flexible; just let us know your needs.
~We do not have a TV, but you are welcome to use our wifi.
~Lots of light - its a hoekhuis! (Corner house)
~Get a great night's sleep: We have rolluiken (medal roller blinds) in the 2 bedrooms on the second level to help kids fall asleep while the sun is still up (sets at 10pm or later in the NL summer), and help everyone sleep in when it is light early (5am or earlier). This is also helpful for getting over jet-lag.
~Appliances, etc: Coffee maker, electric water kettle for tea and lots of varieties of tea, coffee grinder, coffee beans for guest use, microwave, Tosti maker, hand-held mixer and supplies for baking, dishwasher, hair dryer, iron, washing machine & drying racks your clothes.
~Large open-plan downstairs with two comfy couches, many chairs, a desk, books and toys for kids. Ideal for large groups, allows kids and grown-ups to play, work, eat, and read. Our happy guests include an extended family, and several groups of co-workers travelling to Nijmegen for work.
~Door separates downstairs from upstairs to minimize noise while people are sleeping. The attic bedroom has a wall with a door after the staircase, so guests sleeping there will not be bothered by downstairs noise.
~We have a kids table with chairs so smaller guests can eat and color on their own.
~We have fans, but the house does not have air conditioning, as this is mostly not needed in Holland. If there is a hot day, you can also open doors or windows, as the house is designed for great airflow.
-NUMBER OF PEOPLE: The maximum number of adults that should stay here is 6. We set the max number higher than 6 because we welcome families with kids, for example: 2 grandparents, 4 parents, and some grand kids, or alternatively, 2 or 3 couples, with some kids. If you are travelling with more than 6 adults, please contact us so we can tell you about the bed setup.
- American Appliances - Make sure they do not get destroyed by European voltage: Some of our appliances (rice cooker, waffle maker, some fans, and the wireless router in the attic) are from the US and must be plugged into our converters, which are black boxes the size of small shoeboxes with switches on them. If you just use a little adapter on the end of the plug, the appliance will get burned out by the Dutch electrical voltage. But most of our appliances are Dutch and can be plugged right into the wall. (Coffee maker, coffee grinder, water kettle, toaster, tosti/panini maker, hair dryer etc.) Also, your cell phone and most electronics like that are fine with those little plug adapters, because those kinds of electronics have voltage converters built in. But if you brought a hair dryer or other heat based appliance from outside Europe, best to use ours, or plug yours into our converter boxes. For further details, ask us.
- Events/parties might be allowed; please contact us first. We're mostly concerned about noise in the garden bothering our neighbors.
- Children: Our home is safe and welcoming for MOST kids. However, thee are a lot of legos and other toys with small parts. If you have a child that can crawl/walk and is at the stage where they put everything in their mouth, our house might not be safe. Please contact us to ask; we may be able to baby-proof. Also, we do not have baby gates for the stairs, but we do have doors to close and chairs, so you can be creative about keeping a small kid away from the stairs.
- We welcome guests regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or gender-identity. We heard this can be an issue for some travellers, so we thought we should mention this.
Dutch-American family. I am American, my husband is Dutch. We are currently living in the Netherlands with our 2 kids. My husband speaks French, Spanish and German, in addition to Dutch and English, so feel free to send a message in any of those languages. We use AirBnB both as guests and as hosts; but we only host in our home when we are away. We are non-smokers and we are always respectful of other people's homes. We love pets, but we don't have any. (We're happy to feed/walk yours if we're visiting you.) Our kids are delightful in other people's homes. We generally like to get to know a city by walking around, going to museums, learning the history, and eating. We tend to like to eat at least one meal at the AirBnB where we are staying, often breakfast. We're pretty good at staying out of people's way if you are busy, need to use your kitchen, etc. We'd love to hear your tips and suggestions for your city. But if not, no worries. We are low-maintenance and resourceful.
