Ana Maria and her daughter Jessica are incredible hosts. They will make your stay in Cuba so much easier than planned. Ana Maria was so helpful! She picked us up at the airport with her friend, so we had a very smooth transition. She also went out of her way to get wifi cards for us, knew where we could exchange money and has the option of providing a local cell phone that I opted for to carry around in case I needed her help. She took it upon herself to teach me how to make cuban dishes, which made for a delicious meal. Her boyfriend Pablo, is a taxi driver and was sweet enough to drop us off in different parts of Havana. He also offered to drive us wherever we needed. We all went to the beach together and afterward, Pablo took us on a tour of old Havana without even having to be asked! We also all went together after our beach outing to witness the nightly shooting of the cannon. It was a great experience to spend the entire day together. If you'd like to have Ana make breakfast for you, be prepared for an incredible meal. She makes a beautiful breakfast spread that we were always unable to finish! She makes eggs, and either sausage or potatoes and also provides cheese, bread, fruit, juice and coffee. It was delicious. If you'd like to provide a gift for Ana or her daughter Jessica, I can tell you that Ana likes essential oils and dried hibiscus leaves so she can make tea. Jessica enjoys young adult novels in english as a way to practice her english language skills. She and I bonded over books and I know that she'd love to receive more books as they are very difficult to come by. (Books she'd like include popular young adult books by John Green, Cassandra Clare, Rainbow Rowell, Sara J. Maas, and Sabaa Tahir amongst various others. She'd also like to have her own copies of the Harry Potter books.) Maybe you're reading one of these on your vacation and would like to leave it for her when you head home? Just a suggestion from one bookworm looking out for another. Don't be shy about asking them in advance if you're so inclined. Jessica also plays the violin amazingly. She could always use strings for her violin. We were lucky to have Jessica play for us. My husband and I were so grateful to have stayed in this home, as we felt that we were staying with family and our experience in Cuba was so much more fulfilling thanks to their friendship and generosity. You won't be disappointed!
