Not many places survived the '69 Earthquake. Luckily, this one did. This historic and adorably funky cottage is right downtown. Once the Hansel & Gretel Toy Store, now a beautiful oasis in the middle of the city. Walk to farmer's markets, solstice festivals, Iditarod events and many other features of Alaska's largest city. Room has private entrance and full bed with plenty of sunlight.
Plenty of personality in this place. This cottage was originally built in 1940 and still has the original owners/builders names carved in the hearth and entry steps. It has been modified and has all the common amenities (although I just recently removed the ironing board from the kitchen. Different times). Original hardwood floors throughout, but the room available has the original play mat flooring from when it was a toy store. Most of the house is still original, which means smaller doorways and stairs. It makes up for it with open areas and multiple living rooms. Small children's rooms in the attic if you want extra guests (additional booking). Located in downtown and walking distance to everything. However, the landscaping is so plush you can't even tell you're in a city. Large Alaskan trees, flowers and produce create a genuine oasis. If you come in the right season, we would be happy to share our raspberries, rhubarb, and crabapples with you. Maybe even some pie or home made mead!
All areas except private bedrooms are open to all guests. There is a bar for drinks and good conversations. A TV room with a large couch and wood stove for relaxing. We are also music lovers and have a dedicated music room in the basement with an impressive collection of instruments. We often invite our musician friends over as well if you want to join in on a jam session or just sit back and listen. The garden is a great place to relax. On the clear nights we can light up the firepit and roast smores!
I am an astronomer who runs the Planetarium at the University of Alaska Anchorage and live with my boyfriend who is a musician in a local band with our other roommate. We permanently live in the house year round and would love to host you along with our very friendly cat and dog. We are happy to give you as much privacy as you like, or take you on great Alaskan adventures. In the winter, we would be happy to take you to see the northern light and talk to you about the process behind how they occur. In the summer, we'd be happy to explain to you why we have so much free time (only 1 star to look at)! We are born and raised in Alaska and loves sharing our home state with visitors. If you come at the right time, you might even be able to join me on a fishing trip aboard my boat, The Pickle. Or if you are here in the winter, we can take you on one of our frequent skiing and snowboarding trips at the Alyeska Resort.
Rides to and from the airport are available if you need them. If you have your own vehicle, there is parking on-site. If you are allergic to cats or dogs, we can accommodate this by deep cleaning the room and keeping them out of it.
