Set in the splendid isolation of South Connemara, Keeper’s cottage sits in the grounds of Fermoyle Lodge, a Victorian fishing lodge built in 1875. The cottage boasts extensive gardens and spectacular views of the mountains. Close to coral sand beaches and lakes, yet within 40 minutes of cosmopolitan Galway City, the cottage is perfectly positioned. Great hiking, boating and a good choice of restaurants/pubs with live music are within a 15/20 minute drive. Fly-fishing available by arrangement.

Set in its own grounds, surrounded by woodland and gardens, the cottage is in a uniquely tranquil and beautiful spot.

Guests will have access to the grounds and woodland around the cottage and can walk down to Lake Fermoyle and Lake Derreen directly from the bottom of the garden.

I like to be there in person to welcome my guests but I am not always able to do this. I am however always available on the phone and the email and am delighted to help and advise at any stage.

My daughter and I cannot overstate our joy and wonder as we arrived at Fermoyle Lodge. The cottage is extremely comfortable and well-appointed. The gardens and woods are magical in a way that only hundred year old gardens can be, with mature trees and plantings that only several generations can create. Mary and John are to be commended on their loving restoration of this historical treasure and the reclaiming of the garden and its secret delights. It is far off the beaten path and allows for a truly authentic experience of Connemara and her ancient ways. Do watch out for the sheep, cattle, and Connemara ponies that wander freely and may choose to help you slow down and enjoy the views!

The place and grounds were beautiful and well kept. The area however is even more remote than i expected however. Wifi was good for the first few days but then went out the last day and unable to get reconciled for rest of trip. The soaker tub was wonderful but the water in the shower is quite hot and scalding without the ability to adjust but we were able to use the tub instead. If you are looking for somewhere peaceful, quiet, but with modern anemities, than this place is perfect.

Every now and then, air bnb serves up a gem of an experience...this was one of them for us. If secluded wilderness with a home base that is comfortable and amply equipped is what you are after, this place will not disappoint. You will need to drive a bit to reach it (and to go into town for restaurants and staples if you want), but the views, the peace and quiet, and the grounds provide a peaceful retreat from a hurried world. We enjoyed making fires in the two wood burning stoves, exploring the bog and heath around the lake and river, and fishing for local salmon and trout. Easy to access the aran islands ferries from here and Lough Corrib. Mary was a wonderful communicator and all was as advertised. Can't wait to return one day!

Mary and John are fantastic hosts. The cottage is tastefully renovated and is very comfortable. It is in a very peaceful location with ample opportunities for walking/hiking in the surrounding countryside.

Geweldige paradijselijke plek. Verschrikkelijke mooie cottage. Prachtige omgeving. Hele goede verzorging tijdens en bij aankomst. Ligt wel erg afgelegen.

I cannot praise John and Mary enough, as I've never stayed in such a beautiful place full of history and I've never met two such open, considerate and keen hosts. The day after we'd arrived the two of them invited us to a cup of tea and we had a good chat about the history of this place (they are experts!) and their lives. Furthermore, we had the feeling that they really wanted us to get to know the area and have the best experience ever - we certainly made the most of our trip with all their helpful recommendations. We loved the Fermoyle Lodge - it is a former gamekeeper's lodge and has been lovingly renovated by John and Mary over the years. It is warm, clean, cosy and full of beautiful details. The surroundings are breathtaking, the sheep crossing the streets friendly and there are so many things to do. The lodge is the perfect base for trips to the Aran Islands, Kylemore Abbey, Galway City, the Lough Corrib and so on and so forth. We will come back! Kerstin + the rest of the family Lindner

We had an excellent stay at the Keeper's lodge. It is a wonderfull cottage in a beautiful surrounding. The lodge is in a beautiful garden with excellent views. You're in complete solitude but within 15 minutes by car you arrive in the village of Oughterard where you can find everything you need. Marry is a very friendly host. This Airbnb is worth a journey to Ireland. So go there and experience it yourself!

I grew up in London in a Irish family spending all of my childhood summers in the West of Ireland. Every year we made our way out to Connemara and that was the start of my love affair with the area. The combination of the wild landscape, endless beaches and, of course, the spirit of the people makes for a magical holiday any time of the year.
