Far from the madding crowd in a tranquil setting, our modern little cottage is literally surrounded by nature. No view of neighboring houses. Bay Cottage is situated 15 minutes from nearby ocean towns in Cape May County, NJ.
Nature!! Beauty!! This is what you see all around Bay Cottage! During every season of the year.... In the late 1980s we moved our cottage from its former site on the ocean front to our 38 acre property along the Delaware Bay side of the peninsula of Cape May County. Since then our cottage has remained uniquely situated in the center of our 400 feet of frontage along the Delaware Bay - although we have neighbors, their houses are at least a city block distance away - no other structure is within sight of the cottage.... A variety of Atlantic Ocean shore towns and shopping are within a 15 minute drive from the cottage. At the cottage itself, our little back deck overlooks the woodlands, sunrises and pond to the rear of the cottage. The spacious front deck has stellar views of the Delaware Bay and its shore. An ever changing natural scene unfolds each day all around the cottage... Bay waters sparkle in the sunshine, tide slowly moves in and out to then reveal bars of sand interspersed by lingering waters... Sunsets - the sky aglow with the last spectacular colors of the day... Delightful bird viewing of all sorts - an ever changing natural scene unfolds each day all around the cottage. We offer the cottage during all four seasons of the year ~ every season is beautiful ~ rates vary throughout the year.
We do enjoy meeting our guests, but we're well aware that some folks just want to veg out and relax once they arrive at the cottage. We live 10 minutes away and are available and quick to respond if our guests need our help with anything.
AN ALL YEAR ROUND HOLIDAY COTTAGE -
It is unbelievably beautiful at the cottage during every season of the year. For Winter and Fall we have a great central heat system as well as a lovely little gas fed faux wood stove, which, with its pretty flame, provides cheer and comfort on a cold windy day at the cottage. There is nothing like a winters walk along the bay beach early on a frosty day - with the sun rising over the woodland to the east, and the partially frozen bay to the west- sun rays dancing on the sparkling phragmites fronds and the brisk air ... bliss...
DELAWARE BAY BEACH -
The Delaware Bay beaches in New Jersey are open to the public, so you may occasionally see folks off in the distance, walking or fishing along the Bay beach. To put this in perspective, the sand (walkable) part of the beach is a good 80 feet in front of the cottage deck, and from there stretches on to the north and south. The Highs Beach area is not well known... no crowds, just the occasional fisherman, beach walker, bather ....
As to swimming in the Delaware Bay in front of our cottage, every once in a while one of our guests swims there, but that is only possible at high tide. Otherwise the water is too shallow. It is very important to note that any swimming in the Delaware Bay is entirely at your own risk because there is no lifeguard protection there. Most of our guests prefer to drive 15 minutes to any number of the area ocean side towns where there are actual waves and lifeguards... (Like Stone Harbor, the Wildwoods, or Cape May).
PLACES TO WALK -
Along with the excellent walk along the beach, we have a 3/4 mile long private road through the woodland on our property, that we call Gus's Beach Road. It leads from right near the cottage back through woodland to the other end of our property, where our farmhouse is located. Our guests are welcome to enjoy this woodland walk!
Parking is on our driveway directly by the cottage deck. Our driveway passes in front of our cottage, between the cottage deck and the dune and beach, and proceeds south of us to eventually meet up with our private road "Gus's Beach Road". We ask that our guests park off to one side of our driveway up by the cottage - so our southern neighbors can still drive through (we allow them to use our driveway).
Anyone who comes to the cottage should be well prepared to enjoy all sorts of birds and wildlife. Bird song, frog chorus, woodland, pond, bay and natural vegetation all around... It is simply a joy!
Although there are whole days and weeks with no noticeable bug activity, be sure to bring along bug spray - it is best to be prepared just in case (on the odd day when there is no breeze off the bay you may need it).
We are located in the middle of the north-south flyway. This is excellent birding habitat - our property has consistently rate in the top 10 national average of EBirds lists during migration period for the past few years. Raptors, song birds, shore birds, all are there and each a delight (including the eagles we often see out on the sandbars in front of the cottage at low tide).
Our house is a no smoking house. Pets are sometimes allowed - please contact us with information about your pet. We have a gas powered grill on the side deck which we ask that the guests keep clean for the next arrival. Our housekeeper is excellent, and leaves the cottage beautifully clean as well as fresh linens on the beds and towels laid out in the bathroom. We don't provide beach towels, so our guests bring their own. We do ask that guests hose off their feet after coming back from the beach. There is a hose conveniently located up on the front deck, near the entrance door. We share our driveway with our neighbor, so it's important to park off to the side, leaving space for our neighbors to drive through.
