A house on the estuary of a VERY BIG river ie - Lower Breede river - about 15km from the sea, the house is set back about about 20m from the river . It is completely off the grid , ie only solar power and rainwater. It might not suit city dwellers who need every gadget and convenience but its heaven for the hardier ones.
This is a big 25Ha ( 50 acre) property , the nearest neighbouring houses are about 150m away. Its super peaceful and quiet. Our house has a gas stove and fridge , a few solar lights , a gas water heater and our water supply is rainwater collected in tanks . You need to be very sparing with water ( like we all should be in the Cities - but here its especially important.
This place will not suit people who like the bright city lights but its very special for those who like to walk , swim and be in amongst nature .
The river is also a fishing paradise ie Kob , etc . This part of the river is an estuary , its about 12km to the mouth and the whole area is a protected nature conservancy. This is a great river for swimming, mountain biking, bird watching , boating, fishing etc, but you need to be aware that it is tidal and parents need to keep a close watch on children in the water.
The vegetation in the area is renosterbos which is a specific type of fynbos.
There are good walks along the river and on the property . Cape Infanta ( 14km) is nearby with a great swimming spot at the slipway . The is where the Breede meets the ocean and is also a favourite place for Whales to visit - in fact the Whales here outnumber those at Hermanus
There is a basic shop and coffee shop both near here and also at Malgas
There is a house, and a boathouse . The house is the part we rent out . We have various boats in the boathouse and might make some available - talk to us. There is also a braai area and a jetty that projects about about 25m into the river- great for swimming ! .
Driving to Rooikop - this is by gravel roads - about 55km - best to go slow on these and then the last 1km or so is on a farm road ( track ) .
All fine for city cars as long as you drive slowly . If you want to launch boats down our slipway you might need a 4x4.
We live in Cape Town so are only available over the phone . Our neighbour Melane who lives nearby looks after the house and will meet you and help where ever necessary .
There is a 55km gravel road from the National road ( N2) to reach this property . so make sure you are prepared for punctures ! The total distance from CT is 280km and its about a 3.5 hour trip. Our house is pretty isolated , its super peaceful and quiet
Behave as you would in your own house . We expect you to clean and leave the place just as it was when you arrived and in perfect condition for the next guest
We have a minimum three night stay policy
