Edible seaweed and plant cullinary experience
Join us on a five hour experience. You will spend one to two hours on the beach exploring rock pools, foraging and harvesting in our natural environment. I will teach you a selection of edible seaweeds, kelp and mollusks that are prolific in our area. We begin the experience on the beach, where I teach you all the local abundant edible algae, plants and seafood that is available. We spend time learning and exploring. Snorkeling is an option if the weather permits. From there we go back to the Edible Shores kitchen where we clean, prepare and feast on an unforgettable culinary delight. Some dishes are prepared in advance to save time and give you the ultimate food experience. From exploring, harvesting, learning and eating, there is an exciting and beautiful flow to ignite all the senses. A fun, adventurous day out discovering the wild Overberg. Review: Just want to thank you once again for this amazing experience! It is worth so much more than we paid. Not only was the entire experience educational and mind blowing, not only was the food exceptional and ample, most importantly, I feel so accomplished in having foraged food and then ate it. I never thought I could be that cool person that collects mussels and makes her own nori, but it seems, I am, and I'm grateful for that boost in my self confidence. Rene
South Africa shark research adventure
Day 1 Get up close and personal with magnificent bronze whaler sharks - and possibly even a great white - on a thrilling shark cage diving adventure! Take a short boat cruise from the coast of Gansbaai, then test your courage and plunge yourself into the icy Atlantic Ocean to come face to face with these beautiful marine predators. You will be awed at how truly amazing these creatures are when seen underwater. Our onboard marine biologist will provide excellent insight into the history, habits and demographics of bronze whalers, critically endangered Great Whites and other sharks, and the conservation challenges that they face today. Other things to note Please note that this activity is dependent on weather/sea/shark activity and we may need to swap days/adjust the schedule according to Mother Nature. Day 2 You will spend a day with our marine biologist learning about our local shark species, including Great Whites, Pyjama Sharks, Leopard Cat Sharks, Shy Sharks and others. You will also be trained in the basics of ethical handling and tagging of sharks, Great White dorsal fin ID and photography, and data collection/input. In certain cases, where approved by relevant academic institutions, participants are able to gather credits towards their university. Day 3 Go on a wine tasting tour to sample some of the Western Cape’s world-famous vino and chase it up with a picnic on a local cheese farm, where you bask in the sun on a vast green lawn while feasting on some exquisite free range cheeses and other delicacy items. Day 4 We will team up with the kids from the local high school's Marine Science Club to do a beach clean up. We do regular beach clean ups, often collecting as much as 100kgs of trash. We use the Dirty Down methodology to identify the worst trash culprits threatening our oceans. Day 5 We will go on a marine ecotourism tour that will give you the chance to see whales, dolphins, sharks, stingrays, giant petrels and more! Our coastline is blessed with incredibly rich biodiversity and there is no better way to experience our marine and coastal creatures than on one of these amazing tours. Day 6 Go walking in Platbos, Africa's southernmost indigenous forest! Day 7 Take a trip to the southernmost point of Africa - Cape Agulhas - where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic. The meeting of these two oceans, with their respective warm and cold currents contributes to our changeable weather in this part of the world - we can often have 'four seasons in one day!' The coast here is dramatically beautiful, with a rocky headland and sand beaches, and you can stand on the exact spot that marks the southern tip of the continent! You can also visit the historical lighthouse that has guided sailors through the region's notorious storms for almost two centuries. Day 8 We will go on a catch-and-release snorkelling survey to discover some of the smaller sharks that our coastline supports. Commonly occurring species include Leopard Cat Sharks, Pyjama Sharks and both Puffadder and Dark Shy Sharks. These trips are focused on gathering much-needed data about these species, many of which are data deficient, meaning there is not enough research to classify them according to IUCN standards. Other things to note Please note that this activity is dependent on weather/sea/shark activity and we may need to swap days/adjust the schedule according to Mother Nature. Day 9 Penguins are among South Africa’s most comical and endearing creatures, and there are not many of them left – A 2015 survey estimated that a mere 16 000 breeding pairs remain in existence. We will pay a visit to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary, just 5 minutes from our project house. The sanctuary is part of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT) and functions as a rehabilitation centre for penguins and other marine birds. Alternatively, we may visit one of the few penguin colonies on the African coast, roughly an hour's drive away at Stony Point Nature Reserve. Here you can see penguins in their natural habitat and, in breeding season, experience adorable baby penguins covered in their fledgling fluff. Day 10 Explore the drip caves in De Kelders cove. They constitute a magical and delicate ecosystem that fosters the creation of exquisite calcite formations – straws columns, cave pearls, helictites, stalactites and stalagmites. They also provide a safe habitat for two distinct bat species.
