Black Magic - Home Coffee Roasting
We will start off by discussing a broad overview of the coffee plant, its origins, and the roasting process, with the goal of determining what style of coffee you prefer and how to achieve your desired flavor, aroma and body profile.
We will discuss the physics and chemistry of the actual roasting process. Then, we'll learn how to use a couple of different roasters -- both a super-inexpensive DIY modified popcorn-popper, as well as a reasonably priced consumer-level roaster. You'll be very hands-on; my goal is for you to walk away from this experience feeling like you could go do this on your own. You'll know where to buy green beans, your options for roasting them, and the key points to successful roasting.
We should have enough time to roast at least 2 batches, perhaps 3, giving you about 1/2 of a pound of roasted beans for you to enjoy on your trip and/or back home.
Other things to note:
2 guest minimum, please. Solo travelers - I do ask you to book for two.
If you don't like coffee--this probably won't be terribly satisfying -- though non-coffee drinkers have come and enjoyed it. If you do like coffee, you'll leave wondering why you haven't been doing this yourself.
Kids are welcome and we do have a little backyard (and swings etc.) that they are welcome to use. Dogs on leash are also fine.
Please come caffeinated - no coffee is served.
Multnomah Zen, a four waterfall scenic hiking experience
Multnomah Falls and other waterfalls and vistas of the Columbia Gorge are astonishing icons of geology, the sort that have inspired mythology and lore of warriors, gods and passions. We will drive out in our vans to meet the tallest waterfall in the state, and then drive to a few of the shorter but even more stunning ones, too; falls which could only be the daughters and sons of legend.
In this half-day experience, we will explore wonders with some short hikes (totaling less than 2.5 miles/4 km) and visits to overlooks and vistas that will have you gasping in awe. While Multnomah Falls and its iconic Benson Bridge are together the most-visited tourist attraction in the Portland area, they are only a part of our experience.
We will meet at our shop in inner SE Portland, where we'll ride in our comfortable Sprinter and Transit vans to the nearby gorge. Depending on weather conditions, we will visit a few small hidden waterfalls and spectacular plunge-style falls whose columnar basalt has us learning words for "amazing" in other languages.
We'll also tell you stories, geology, botany and oft-repeated tales of pioneers and road-builders, but also the old stories we've learned, of gods and wild spirits and about the oldest North American civilization, forever altered by “manifest destiny."
Please note we book directly as well as through AirBNB, and your group may be up to 10.

We'll spend about half the workshop smelling our way through a selection of over 30 raw ingredients, while discussing fragrance and blending techniques. After this, you'll turn your fragrance into an oil-based roll-on personal fragrance.

The Original Alpaca Picnic Experience
It's a picnic, but with alpacas! Yup, you heard right, an Alpaca Picnic.
We'll set you up at your own picnic table (and picnic blanket!) in one of our pastures with a picnic basket filled with food and drink and all the fixins.
You'll get to sit, drink, eat & be merry while surrounded by a pack of friendly alpacas. We'll even leave you with some alpaca food. Some will come up as curious about you as you are about them. Some won't even acknowledge your existence. But the one thing that is guaranteed is that ALL of them will put smiles on your face that you may never be able to wipe.
I mean, c'mon...an alpaca picnic! You know you want to...
Please be aware when you book the price is 150 per adult, 50 per child, so make sure to pick how many people will be coming so that we prepare enough food for everyone. The $175 price is if just one person is booking for a solo experience.
The best experience in Bend is great for couples, families, groups, & team-building!
Also just to note, while they're adorable year round, if you're looking to picnic during maximum floof, consider booking before they are sheared in mid-May, at which point they'll look goofy aliens for a few months.
We can accommodate for most food sensitivities (also vegan, vegetarian, keto).
(Please reach out if your preferred date is not listed)

Pottery Wheel Lesson at Artist Studio
Each person gets 1 hour on the wheel! This experience is 2 hours for 2 people. If it's just you book for one person. If there are two, please book two slots.
The first 5 minutes of class I will give you a brief tour of the studio. You will get access to a local Portland artists’ studio and a chance to see behind the scenes of the artists’ process as well as works in progress. What is unique about this space is all of the residents are practicing artists and business owners. It is a great space to get a peek into the Portland art scene.
I will start the instruction by explaining the main principles of wheel throwing technique using visual aids. We will then move into the practical instruction. I will instruct you on centering the clay on the wheel, using the coning technique to prep the clay, and finally pulling the clay into its final form. You will have enough time to make between 1-2 pieces depending on what you choose to create. Some great first project ideas include: mug, bowl, etc. You might get muddy! Each students get 1 hour of instruction time.
Come with a strong vision in mind or we can create something unique together! The goal of this class is for you to leave with a solid knowledge of beginner wheel throwing technique

Bike & taste through Eastside food carts
At our shop location in the thriving SE industrial district, you'll be fitted for a bike and helmet before heading out on a culinary experience through some of the more than 60 food cart pods in Portland. You will sample favorites spanning a range from Oregon farm-to-table delights, to snacks appropriate for late-night cravings.
Your guide will learn about your food preferences and the group will head out toward our first stop. It's the beginning of a neighborhood ride of 8-12 miles (13-19 km) to three of our favorite food cart pods, as we unfold the fascinating (and only told by us!) tale of how Portland came to be the epicenter of the food cart craze.
After the story, the group will bike up a gentle hill to the Hawthorne neighborhood, part of Portland's hometown story: the heart of all that's delicious, funky, and hippie, a thoroughfare with a street food soul! You will ride into the city's foodie history (going back over a century!)
Your guide will select food for the group to sample at each pod, with an option for you to purchase beer or dessert, and some stops that tell a bit more to the food cart story. We'll return to the shop at the end of our ride, full of street food and fun.
Electric Bike Tour of Bend - Deschutes River/Old Mill
Imagine taking in the stunning views of Bend and the Deschutes River with snow-capped mountains in the background - all while pedaling effortlessly on a quality electric bike. We will hit some incredibly scenic spots while staying on multi-use paths so cars will not be present. We will learn a bit about the town, the river and the Old Mill area while casually exploring on e-bikes and hopefully encounter some river otter and other such wildlife. This will be an intimate group (limit 4 people) so that we can maximize our time in these incredible surroundings. At some point during the tour, we will stop along the river and relax while enjoying a tasty beverage of your choice.
Beginner's glass blowing lessons in Portland, Oregon
Ever been interested in trying your hand at blowing glass? Join me in my flameworking studio and learn how to make your first piece of glass art at Chadly Glass Studio!
I’m a professional borosilicate glass blower with over 10 years of experience and offer beginner's classes in inner SE Portland.

Students get to keep any glass they create, and gain knowledge and hands-on experience in a very unique field.

Unreal OregonCoast HaystackRock CannonBeach Tour & Top Guide
We drive west.
The city stops and nature begins. Across the valley floor, up the coast range into fog. Thoughts of Bigfoot begin as you marvel at the trees. "So green," you say. Sun beams through the moss and leaves. The air smells like ocean.
"you'll want to move to Oregon" ~S
The guide tells stories. Volcanoes and floods. Natives tribes and legends of shipwrecks, trappers, loggers, and pioneers. State legacies of women, ethnicities, and Oregon's hidden world influence.
"amazing tour guide, driver, and host" ~K
A town appears, shingled in natural cedar. Wind spinners, taffy and seafood mix with people, kids, dogs and seagulls.
We pass a wooden puffin and park by a secret path. "Haystack Rock," says the guide. You stare, take pics, and walk closer. The endless Pacific waves roll in, rock monoliths line the shore. Beachcombers speckle the sand, holding shoes combing the beach poking flotsam. Kites fly and dogs run with joy. People picnic, sit and stare. "Keep an eye on the ocean," he reminds. A surfer rides. A seal bobs. A distant whale plume by a lighthouse. We find waterfalls, elk, eagle, and gigantic trees.
"so glad I chose this tour over others" ~G
Film locations like Twilight, The Goonies, Point Break! Awesome any weather! See my reviews!
We travel roundtrip from Portland to Cannon Beach area, 8 hours.

Forge a Knife
Forge a Knife!
Guests will forge with Host Gordon to hand-hammer and grind out a lifetime artisan knife. We will forge in a high temperature propane forge, use epic European anvils, and use 1095 (high carbon steel) to shape memories and a functional piece of art. The whole process takes around 8 or 9 hours. We will heat, hammer, normalize, and quench our steel. We will feel the steel move under the hammer blows. We will see the steel take form. Gordon will guide you to keep your blade steel straight and flat! You may choose to accept his help or not - this is part of the fun. Grinding, creating a handle, and other finishing touches come after the hammer work.
We offer two styles with 1095 high carbon steel: an every day carry and a utility kitchen knife.
If you have your own steel, or want to upgrade steel to what I may have on hand, or create a customized design --- please inquire --- before booking for additional costs and additional time estimate to complete the piece! If additional time is necessary after the scheduled experience time, then shop rates will apply.
Note: We also host an AirBnB "Tiny House Farm Stay". If you book a stay along with your "Forge a Knife" AirBnB Experience then we offer a 15% discount on your stay!
