Skip the line tour of Edinburgh Castle
This tour includes a little of The Royal Mile and a lot of The Castle. Set aside time after your tour to explore. The price advertised does not include the entrance price to the castle, this is because some people book their own tickets in advance. You can purchase castle tickets directly from us at the start of the tour for your convenience. We meet on the Royal Mile and start by giving a little background history to Edinburgh and the Castle to help put everything into context. Moving up to the castle esplanade where you will learn about the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and two of the most famous figures from Scottish history; Robert the Bruce and William Wallace. Entering the Castle we stop by the Argyle Battery where you will learn about the 1 o'clock gun. Moving on we head down to the Hospital Square where we get impressive views from the Western Panorama before heading up towards the castle barracks and prisoner of war camp, all these areas have enthralling stories that only a guide can bring to life. We then climb to the top of Castle Rock entering the medieval section of Edinburgh Castle. Here we see the oldest building in Edinburgh, St Margaret’s Chapel and Mons Meg, a monstrous canon! The tour finishes in the Crown Square which is the heart of Edinburgh Castle and I will tell you all about the daring attacks against this iconic fortification.
Croft Tour on the Isle of Skye
Due to annual leave (first holiday in over 10 years) we are unable to offer Croft tours until 6th October. Any enquiries will not be answered until our return. We will meet on the Croft, beside the workshop. Your tour will begin by introducing you to our animals, sheep, Highland cows and donkeys. You will receive a warm Highland welcome and will gain insight into the daily routines of crofting and the life of our sheep and how we produce ethical wool. We will then enter my workshop where you will gain a brief history of fleece preparation, hand spinning, the reasons and history behind our uniquely hand knitted designs including our famous bespoke fisherman’s Gansey. You will have an opportunity to see our products and understand about Croft sustainability here on the Isle of Skye. A humerous story telling experience for everyone. Other things to note: Bring waterproof clothing as the weather can change quickly. The experience is not suitable for small children. As we are a working Croft, and not a petting farm, we cannot guarantee you will be able to touch any of the animals.
Underground Beer Tasting
We'll start off with our 1st beer and a tour of our building, a 16th Century prison and courthouse. We have some original features untouched for hundreds of years. We'll make our way down to the hidden vaults under our building, where you'll try a selection of 4 other local beers in the most hidden tasting room in Edinburgh! Along with learning about the beers from an expert guide and the history of brewing in Edinburgh, participants will get to see the secret rooms hidden in the old prison, as well as stories of prisoners who were held here, the dark and grimy history of Auld Reekie, and how beer shaped the way we live our lives today. Other things to note Please be aware that the vault is accessed via about 20 steps- there is no lift/ramp access to the lower level. Check-in with reception staff at The Hostel above
Whisky Tasting with Music and History
During your Whisky Tasting Experience you will be taken on a journey sampling five of the finest Malt Whiskies the Highlands of Scotland has to offer whilst learning about the rich, emotional and powerful history of Inverness and the Highlands, including the Jacobite Rebellion, The Battle of Culloden and the Highland Clearances. Your host will also entertain you with traditional songs and music synonymous with Highland history and Scotch Whisky. Scotch Malt Whisky, history, traditional music and craic, you only have to bring the missing ingredient....... Yourselves!! Be prepared to laugh, cry, clap your hands, tap your feet, maybe even sing along and the best part, enjoy the warm glowing feeling that the whisky naturally provides!!
Stargazing walk with Gaelic stories and tea
Join a short evening stroll to stargaze and explore Scotland’s own Gaelic and Pictish stories of the stars from thousands of years ago. The skies are a rich tapestry of tales of characters and their adventures, with stories from the four cities of the Northern Islands of warrior goddesses, one-eyed giants, shapeshifting creatures and bad-tempered cows... (The Gaelic myths are just as impressive as the Greek myths!) And we’ll keep warm with a cup of foraged wild tea. Suitable for all ages.
West Coast Canoe Foraging
Visit the shore of a stunning, Scottish sea loch, surrounded by mountains, and mixed woodland - join me here on a unique, canoe-based experience. I am a trained ecologist (studied otters for my PhD) and Chief Survival Instructor for Wildwood Bushcraft. During our experience you will explore the sheltered sea loch by canoe. We can use the canoe to access places that are hard to reach from the land - e.g. beautiful silver sand beaches, small wooded islands, and a wild rocky pensinsula. You will be able learn about this unique environment, collect shellfish and cook on a fire. You should leave with a better understanding of this beautiful landscape, its fascinating history, how to survive there in harmony, while making minimal impact. You will have been deeply involved in nature and leave with some fantastic memories, new skills and a great bonding experience!
Ben Nevis Guided Group Walk
We the start day meeting at the Ben Nevis Inn. Here we will meet and greet, discussing the kit and weather for the day. The journey starts, with a gentle introduction to the Pony Track, built in 1883, with plenty of history about the area along the way. Ascending steadily, we reach half way up approximately 2 hours into the journey, with a good opportunity to feed, and refill water bottles at the Red Burn. Now we start to ascend the famous Zig Zags, gaining height rapidly, along with the extending views across Ardnamurchan to the Great Glen. The plateau will be reached, followed by a steady walk to the summit, arriving in about 4 hours from the start. There is plenty to see on the summit whilst we eat (Weather allowing). The ruins of the Weather Observatory (1883-1904), The old "Hotel", and the iron frame that held Clement Wragge's observation instruments which pre dates the Observatory. If the weather allows, we can see the rest of Scotland...Mountains in every direction. We will descend the same path back to The Ben Nevis Inn, returning at approximately 5pm. We will take a series of photographs to document your day, which will become available to you as part of our service.
