Starting at Belfast city hall (we meet at the front gates of City Hall in Donegall Square North) and finishing by the Beacon of Hope beside the river Lagan, the tour visits 7 locations in the city centre where major events occurred during the conflict.

We start with a short introduction to Irish / British history and why the Troubles start in the late 1960’s. Over the course of 1.5 miles and 2 hours and 15 minutes we then tell the stories of each site; what happened and why, who was involved, and the effect these attacks had on the city and its people, affecting nearly every part of our daily lives.

We also demonstrate the impact of the peace process; you will witness the social and cultural regeneration of the city as we walk through the Cathedral Quarter and waterfront areas where you will also see some of the street art that demonstrates our newfound vibrant culture.

Throughout the tour we use visual aids with images of the Troubles and the places we visit from the 1960’s, 70’s & 80’s to help you envisage the realities of life then compared to now.

The tour is factual and historically accurate to ensure it is unbiased and non-partisan, but we also weave our own stories into the tour to bring our history to life for you.

There is also time built into the tour to ensure that questions are encouraged from guests and that our answers are meaningful.

We are Mark Wylie, Paul ‘Donzo’ Donnelly and James Ellson, conflict historians with qualifications in Irish History, Politics and Anthropology. We were all born in Belfast in the 1960's, (in the year the Troubles began!).

We have worked extensively in teaching, mediation work with interface communities and ex-combatants, and Victims & Survivors groups, and of course as tour guides.

We began giving tours to visitors in 2013. We are immensely proud of our city and this is reflected in what we do. Our ‘A History of Terror’ Belfast city walking tour was Highly Commended at the Northern Ireland Tourism Awards in 2019 and is the only ‘peace and reconciliation’ or ‘political history’ tour to receive a 5 star rating by Tourism Northern Ireland. Paul was named 'Top UK Tour Guide' at the Wanderlust World Guide Awards in 2019.

We meet at the front gates of Belfast City Hall in Donegall Square Nor and will visit 7 locations in the heart of the city including the pedestrianised central shopping area, the Cathedral Quarter, home to some of our best and worst bars, restaurants and street art, and then finish by the Beacon of Hope on the banks of the river Lagan, with views across to the Castlereagh Hills and the iconic cranes in Harland & Wolff.

A wonderful couple of hours spent getting a full 800 year history of Ireland's and specifically Belfast's history and politics. Steve our guide was excellent and so knowledgable. I would thoroughly recommend this tour to anyone wanting a thorough but accessible introduction to Belfast and the Troubles.

Stephen was a fantastic tour guide, we learned so much, he has such a wealth of knowledge. Our first time in Belfast and this was a great introduction to get an understanding of what has happened. Well worth it, would highly recommend :)

Steve was our tour guide and what a lovely, gentle soul he was. A fountain of knowledge on the history of the troubles and an excellent storyteller too. The tour meanders through the city centre, stopping at various sites of significance in relation to the troubles. Steve not only places you physically at the scene of past events but his use of language places you “in” the scene, as if you were there as it happened, which makes the whole experience a lot more personal and sobering. Despite growing up in the Republic of Ireland, the tour taught me so much I never knew about our country’s troubled history. It truly was a humbling experience and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

The tour was extremely thoughtful and was very impactful. I greatly enjoyed hearing how the Troubles impacted the individuals in the city and the insight the tour guide was able to provide about violence as a cycle. As best as one can while only visiting a city for a few days as a tourist, I felt like I was able to better understand how the people of Belfast arrived at where they are today.
