MY NEIGHBORHOOD IS YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
You will be staying in the one of the most iconic and photographed neighborhoods in the world, the North End in Boston..you’ll see tourists are everywhere– but since you’re living like a local, suddenly you’ll feel how celebrities feel!
If you are looking for a truly local experience, The Apartment is a great pick as the streets are chock full of friendly neighbors. Locals consider the streets their backyard–participate in their boisterous conversations, attend a lawn chair concert with loud opera music, and or over warm Cappuccino’s, join in a lively discussion of the days’ events.
The North End is like no other place in the world, when walking around here, you’ll feel as though you’re walking the streets of Italy, or a movie set, as many famous films were shot in and around the neighborhood. At the nearby dockside Long Wharf, and right up the street at the Moakley Courthouse, Martin Scorsese’s Oscar winning film, The Departed, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, and Alec Baldwin was shot. The neighborhood has also been the recent backdrop for the Johnny Depp movie, Black Mass, the film about the real life, notorious gangster, James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, as well as Ben Affleck’s Prohibition era picture, Live By Night- a crime drama about Dorchester native, Dennis Lehane, and the crime drama, The Town, as well his directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone. The list goes on.
Of note: The last two films were in production and being shot around town are ‘Stronger’ with Jake Gyllenhaal, about a Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor, and Patriots Day, by Mark Wahlberg, which chronicles the Boston Marathon bombings.

LOCAL LORE & LEGENDS
The Apartment sits smack dab in one of the oldest neighborhoods in the United States and adjacent to North Square, the oldest public square in America. The Puritans arrived and settled in the North End as early as 1645. Cobblestone streets were laid out, wharves and warehouses constructed, as well as houses, averaging 400 sq. ft in size, and churches. From the pulpit of the original North Church, the Puritan Pastor, Increase Mather, and his son, Cotton Mather, ministered their congregation with passages from Increase Mather’s 1689 book, Memorable Providences Relating to Witchcraft and Possessions, which fueled the witchcraft hysteria in Salem. Both men are buried in nearby Old North Cemetery on Copp’s Hill.
The site at Copp’s Hill is a must see- and includes gravestones that contain musket holes from the Revolutionary War. Also of note- early residents of the North End included slaves who lived in an area called, New Guinea, after the region of Africa from which they were captured. Their graves are also In Old North Cemetery.
In 1721, the now famous Old North Church, erected a steeple atop the church, which rose 192 feet in the air, and was used as a beacon to help ships navigate the rocky coastline of Boston harbor. It was here that the young boy, Paul Revere, worked for five pennies a month, ringing the morning Church bells.
The North End is often called Boston’s Little Italy, as the one square mile community is home to one of the last remaining old skool, very Italian neighborhoods, the descendants of Genovese, Sicilian, Milanese and Neapolitan immigrant families who originally settled here have lived in the North End for generations.
Of note-the North End has had some very notorious residents, many ‘made-men’ and wiseguy’s that now live in the "Big House. " If you see, ‘Men In Black’ suits taking photos on the corner, be aware that they may be around keeping tabs on their ‘assigned familia.’
The North End has also been home to many notable persons from recent history- the English author, Charles Dickens, ‘Honey Fitz’ Fitzgerald (President John F. Kennedy’s Grandfather), who became Boston’s first Irish Mayor, as well as his daughter, Rose Fitzgerald, who married a Kennedy.
People watching in the North End is amazing-you never know what’s going to happen at any time North End; many happenings are impromptu- Arthur Fiedler, the conductor of the world famous Boston Symphony Orchestra, aka Boston Pops, once conducted an impromptu concert on Hanover Street; Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Sacred Heart Church with an outdoor mass in North Square.
